Citizen Kane Unspools This Saturday

kane.jpg

Sink into the seats at Virginia Theatre to take in what is arguably the greatest movie of all time. This Saturday, the historical downtown theater unspools the film Citizen Kane, the American Film Institute’s number one on the big screen.

Released in 1941, the black and white flick loosely portrays the life of newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst through the dramatic portrayal of Charles Foster Kane’s rise to success. Directed by Orson Welles who also depicts Kane, the film follows him from his foray into “yellow journalism” until his death when he mutters the infamous phrase “rosebud.” A roving reporter searches through Kane’s personal life and public persona to scoop the story about what his dying word meant.

News-Gazette Film Series presents the movie on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Virginia Theatre in located at 203 W. Park St. Tickets are $5. Next, the Virginia Theatre shows the film I Am Legend, Feb. 19 and 21 at 7 p.m.

Man, I would really love to see that movie in that theatre. Alas. CU, I miss you, though not your ridiculous coldness.

Coincidentally, I just saw CITIZEN KANE II with Dan Aykroyd as Charles Foster Kane last night on DVD. Rosebud...Henri...with mustard. Indeed.
