This annual event offers the opportunity for U of I Dance students to showcase their work and their talents, and this year’s offering has special meaning. It will be honoring Kate Kuper, who passed away last year. Kuper was a community engagement faculty member in the Department of Dance and made quite an impact on the community with programs ranging from Creative Dance for Children to Dance for People with Parkinson’s and much more. The event is family friendly, and will feature pieces by local faculty and students as well as visitors from the Latvian Contemporary Dance Choreographer’s Association. Rod Tuffcurls and the Bench Press, The Canopy Club, 9 p.m., $8
When I think of cover bands, I think of a dive bar and a group of musicians playing music from the 60’s or 80’s. It’s not the most exciting thing, for me. Rod Tuffcurls is something completely different though! They cover music from all time periods and even a few disney classics. It was a lot of fun the last time I went and plus they have drinking music, and nothing says fun like drinking music. (DS)
SATURDAY, November 11th
Adopt a furry friend from Hospice Hearts, Market Place Shopping Center, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Veterans adopt for free, $25/$50 for civilians
Hospice Hearts, an all-volunteer, foster-based animal rescue, takes in animals whose owners are no longer able to care for them due to nursing home admission, illness, or death. Often times the pets of these folks are not adoptable in a shelter, and I’m sure you can figure out what happens to them in that case. This event, “Pets for Vets” provides an opportunity for service members to adopt an animal, free of charge. Civilians are welcome, too, of course. You can meet the adoptable animals, including a whole bunch of kittens, as well as older, more mature (that is, housebroken) animals. Find them near the Bergner’s. Photo from Facebook (JH)
Britt Von Decker Trunk Show, Rumours Hat Shoppe, 1-5 p.m., free
Britt Von Decker is a milliner currently residing in Chicago, and Rumours Hat Shoppe is hosting her for a trunk show to showcase her women’s head pieces. Plus, free drinks! (PS)
Learn to make Drunken Noodles (Pad Kee Mao), Common Ground Food Co-op, 3-5 p.m., $7/$12
I think Pad Kee Mao was the first Thai dish I ever tried, and it was delicious. I haven’t been able to find a version of Drunken Noodles as excellent as the one I had all those years ago. When you can’t find your favorite thing in the world, you have to learn to make it. In this class you’ll learn to make this popular dish, and then you can take home your knowledge. You can’t even order a dish of Drunken Noodles for less than the price of the class, so get yourself a ticket, and learn to make this super popular Thai dish. Photo from Facebook (JH)
Pizza FM Presents Snooze, the Tomblands and Snayl, Flynns Arcade at 8 p.m., $5
Snooze is a math-rock band coming from Chicago and that is pretty exciting in it of itself. Add in local band Snayl and you’ve got yourself a fun time! This is a show you won’t want to miss, great music and fun times. (DS)
SUNDAY, November 12th
Attend the Craft League of CU Art Fair, Urbana Civic Center, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., free admission
Peruse and possibly purchase the craftings of over 30 local artists, makers and crafters with items made through a variety of mediums. There will be metalworks, photography, paintings and prints, basketry, and much more. Check out their Facebook event for specifics artists. (JM)
