Market Watch: Time to get your corn on!

Yes, it's true — the season's first sweet corn will be available in limited quantities at the Market this Saturday. There won't be much — weather and varmints have really put the whammy on the local growing season in general — so you'll have to come early and prowl rows 1 and 4. There'll be plenty more corn in the coming weeks, but there's something about those first ears, especially when they're on the grill...

Speaking of weather, let's talk about rain for a second. We need to remind all Farmers' Marketeers that Market at the Square is kinda like the Postal Service — it's open rain or shine, hot or cold, humid or perfect. While many arts/craft vendors will opt out of the Market on a rainy day (surely you've seen what water does to soap!), the produce vendors are always there. Grab your funkiest umbrella and come out — inspired by Kathy Wicks from the Urbana Free Library (they braved the elements last Saturday, as you'll see), any time it rains I'll be taking photos of awesome rain fashion — umbrellas, slickers, galoshes, etc. Show us your stuff, and show some local farmers some love at the same time

THIS WEEK'S PRODUCE: arugula, basil, beets, blackberries, blueberries, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cilantro, cucumbers, field greens, garlic scapes, green beans, green onions, kale, kohlrabi, leaf lettuce, leeks, nectarines, onions, parsley, peaches, potatoes, raspberries, spinach, sugar snap and other peas, summer squash, SWEET CORN, swiss chard, tomatoes, turnips, zucchini and probably even more stuff

Art at the Market: The Urbana Public Arts Program's Art at the Market is back for another installment, this time with local artist Roberta Bennett. Come join Roberta for this free, all-ages watercolor workshop between 8 and noon on Saturday; the Art tent will be adjacent to the City's tent at the NW entrance to the Market. Questions? Contact Anna at alhochhalter@city.urbana.il.us or 384-2311.

Second Saturday: The Urbana Business Association will be sponsoring Second Saturday, this weekend in Downtown Urbana. This event, which showcases downto3wn merchants and other vendors, runs from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Go check it out after the Market. Call Susan at 344-3872 or email susan@urbanabusiness.com with questions.

Pssst: If you like getting bagels from the bagel guy in Row 4, stock up this weekend — he'll be on vacation for the 7/18 and 7/25 Markets.

See you out there!

Actually, I regret to inform everyone that after this went to press, Stewart the Bagel Guy called and let me knww he wouldn’t be at the Market this weekend, either. 3 weeks without bagels, OMG… :: rends clothing ::

If you REALLY have a bread or bagel need, let me know, and we might be able to work something out.

I joined on 09-09-09 after living here over a year, and having to listen to my dad tell me how his best friend is, like, #27 or something crazy like that, and how said friend never lived further than 50 feet from the Illini Inn while going…

@Annie: Yeah, my bad. That was the best part! Drinking + memory exercises = fun @Rob: According to Ask the English Teacher, “My dictionary says ‘drunk’ is an archaic past tense of ‘drink.‘“ We’re all about the new grammar around here.

“more beer is drank”   Awesome. Way to go “editors.“

You left out the best part—you have to REMEMBER your number after the beer chugging!     Yeah, I’m a member.

Great article, man. Like you, I didn’t really know Daniel all that well, but I felt the impact of his death. I too was inspired by him and it pleases me to see that he continues to live on in the spirit of the community.

Thanks you guys…I love living in a community that can connect, share, and create through food. It’s inspiring…

<div> A beautiful recap of the evening and thank you for sharing why you find what the Fund is doing is inspiring. I haven’t been able to write too much about my feelings about the community’s loss of Dan yet either, but Dan has also inspired me…

Seth and Justine, thanks so much!  Through your writing and your photos, everyone can get at least a taste of what was served up Sunday night.  Dan would very much have liked that! As you say, our community is very much “fertile ground,“ and Dan had such…

That is perhaps the best article you have ever written… a love letter to Champaign-Urbana and the people who call it home.

Illinois has simply had no luck at all in these Mizzou games. None. I think maybe we’re do for a couple of bounces to go our way. If we get one or two (or sever or eight) breaks, I think it’s a win.

Jason, Savoy could easily join the CPL tax district, which is probably closer to most Savoy residents than the Tolono library is.  But my impression is that Savoy residents as a whole don’t want to pay the cost of the CPL (Tolono’s library taxes are cheaper), even…

Sorry, but I am lagging behind on updates to the map. Also, some construction projects were delayed from their original start date. On a more positive note, I am putting together a map of haunted houses in Central Illinois. I have a few plotted already, and I…

I’ve never gotten the privilege of all the services CPL cardholders get.  I just want to be able to go out of my way to drive to the CPL to check out books, pay fines, maybe buy some coffee, and enjoy the library.  None of those activities…

These days, there is more to using a library than checking out books. At one time, paying into the Lincoln Trails system probably would cover the expenses incurred by other libraries in the system. Now, with Internet, videos, coffee shops, wireless Internet hubs, etc., I suspect the…

(speaking as a Savoy resident)  By paying taxes to support a member of the LTLS, we are paying our “fair share” to use any LTLS library—Tolono, Champaign, Urbana, etc.  This is how library systems work.  The 6% of CPL’s circulation represented by Tolono users is NOT significant…

I read Timbo’s argument. I think the key word is “speculating.“

I would be interested to hear more about the “word on the street”—how are individual hauling companies fulfilling their promise to recycle?

Timbo makes a smart, sound argument. Reread it.

And, I might add, no one is being prevented from using the Champaign library. They are just being asked to pay their fair share if they are going to use it as their primary library.

Dan Schreiber avatar

The equation is pretty simple here. If you want social services, then pay the taxes required to run those social services. These things only work if everyone puts in their fair share. As a heavy user of the Champaign Library, I say bravo to this new policy.

Curtis Orchard is always good for an hour or three, especially if you have rugrats.

What is the increased marginal cost of serving a resident of Savoy or Mahomet? I suspect negligible. What is the increased revenue to be realized by this new policy? I suspect very little. Aside from these financial aspects, what are the most probable results from this new…

Thanks for the article, Ben.  I was not familiar with this band until now and even though I won’t be able to attend the show on Friday they are now on my radar.  A *good* jam band is hard to find, and these folks appear to fill…

Katie, have the residents of Savoy and Tolono thought about having their taxes raised a little to help their public library expand? That’s a possibility for them. And then everybody wins.
