The Smile Politely Editors are comprised of Justine Bursoni, Seth Fein, Joel Gillespie, Doug Hoepker, Brian McGovern, Ryan Neaveill and Dan Schreiber. They, along with the website designer Mason Kessinger and founding Editor-in-Chief Chris Maier, decide to highlight certain events going on in Champaign-Urbana in a democratic fashion, without bias, in order to best bring to you the finest information on the entertainment around town.
We’d love to tell you which bands you’ll see tonight at The Highdive, but we have no idea ourselves.
The 17th Annual Great Cover-Up, where notable local bands transform into “cover bands” for one night only, kicks off tonight at 9:30 p.m. with Kilborn Alley — a blues group on most days, but who will they be tonight? Megadeth? John Mayer? No one can say for sure, because the performing bands keep their choices a secret until the moment they take the stage.
A team of Smile Politely writers, photographers, and videographers will be at The Highdive each night to capture the happenings in multimedia, and we will be posting their findings by the time you’re crawling to the office coffee pot the next day. Those who are unable to attend, or those who witnessed the spectacles and want to dish about their favorite performances – be sure to check in with us for highlights of the event, who covered what, and what surprises can’t possibly be topped next year.
The 17th Annual Great Cover-Up begins tonight at 9:30 p.m., and continues Tuesday, Jan. 22nd, and ends on Thursday, Jan. 24th with final performers elsinore. Proceeds benefit “a yet to be determined” charity, and cover is seven bucks each night. The Highdive is located at 51 Main St. in Champaign.
