Anger These Days Just Doesn’t Sound Like Ministry

Perhaps it's simply the fact that I am older and a bit less cynical, but heavy music made with guitars seems to have become pretty terrible. I used to really enjoy it. Now, let me qualify that by stating that I probably don't know enough to really give an adequate estimation on the subject, but I hear lots of heavy music all the time — from super hardcore like Immolation to what fans of said band would call "pussy shit" …

Karate Kid Soundtrack Brings Back Memories

featured_post

Some film soundtracks have a way of defining a moment in modern times. Recently, Larry Gates of Curb Service showed us this truth by honoring one of the best soundtracks to a film at this Sunday's edition of The Great Cover Up: Pulp Fiction. Others to consider are A Hard Day's Night; Superfly; Easy Rider; The Graduate; Saturday NIght Fever; Fast Times at Ridgemont High; Top Gun; Dazed and Confused; Resevoir Dogs; Magnolia — the list could seriously go on …

Now Hear This! Vince Guaraldi Trio — “Little Birdie” (1972)

With the holiday season officially in full swing, and Christmas music and Muzak being played from every speaker system in earshot, I thought it might be worth sharing this tune that I rediscovered over the Thanksgiving weekend. I love Peanuts as much as the next person; it’s as American as it gets and generally filled with decent tales or morality and humorous asides. The season calls for at least one, if not multiple, viewings of the famous A Charlie Brown …

Now Hear This! Frank Lenz — “All My Stoner Friends” (2003)

Back in 2003, local Parasol-umbrella label Grand Theft Autumn rallied their friends and foes over the years to create a compilation album intriguingly titled Continue Reading…  |  Comments (2) comments  |  Permalink

Now Hear This! Ester Drang — “Valencia’s Dying Dream” (2006)

Near the end of my performing career, my band, Absinthe Blind, had the chance to open up for Starlight Mints at The Casbah in San Diego in August of 2003. Naturally, we did the chit chat thing with them upon arrival and following the show. It was learned soon thereafter that one of their members, Andy Nunez, also owned Opolis, an extremely hip all ages joint that does indie rock shows, in Norman, OK. He suggested that we hook up …

Now Hear This! The Asteroid #4 — “Tricks of the Trade” (1999)

Around the turn of the century, Philadelphia was on drugs. Or so it seems any way. Evidence points to the huge uprising of bands that willfully gave themselves a “psychedelic” tag, culminating in the compilation and subsequent release of Continue Reading…  |  Comments (2) comments  |  Permalink

Now Hear This! The Afghan Whigs — “Miles Iz Ded” (1992)

I like to think I’ve led a bit of a charmed life. I believe that we all think that to a certain degree; one can’t look ahead to each day without holding on to a few nuggets from the past that brought smiles to our faces. For me, it was stuff like winning a Little League Championship, catching a home run ball at Wrigley, opening for bands like Swervedriver and then, ten years later, booking tours for Adam Franklin (their …

Now Hear This! XTC — “Reign of Blows” (1984)

Like most children, I gravitated to the things I was not allowed to pursue. For music, that meant at least two of every five songs that we heard on MTV. My folks, bless their hearts, simply didn’t want my young mind corrupted by the likes of artists like Twisted Sister, Dead or Alive, Duran Duran (their early stuff was basically softcore porn in a song) and the like. One such artist that my father freaked out about was XTC. Unfamiliar …

Now Hear This! The Lassie Foundation — “All Together Now” (2001)

With summer waning, there are few things left to keep the warm sun firmly in place. For me, one of them is to keep listening to The Lassie Foundation’s split CD with Duraluxe, I Duel Sioux and the Ale of Saturn. I’d argue that the first five songs on this album qualify as the most depthful pop music to come out of the west coast in this decade. Those who had the pleasure to watch the band perform can attest …

Now Hear This! Grasshopper and The Golden Crickets — “NY Avenue Playground” (1998)

After watching a poorly attended but completely incendiary performance by the upstate New York band Hopewell on Friday night, I was inspired to start digging out some of my other favorite Catskill Mountains musicians. One such performer goes by the name of Grasshopper, who is better known as a guitarist and songwriter of one of the world’s (arguably) most influential rock bands of the past twenty years: Mercury Rev. And while I’d love to post the whole of Deserter’s Songs …

Thanks for the article, Ben.  I was not familiar with this band until now and even though I won’t be able to attend the show on Friday they are now on my radar.  A *good* jam band is hard to find, and these folks appear to fill…

Nice article, love the Dead quote in the beginning. If they can get down here to Central FL I’ll definitely be heading out to the show. Some of my friends have finally stopped wincing when I say “jam band.“ I’ve now tried my best at more descriptive…

good call on that Herring recording, Josh. Love that version of Exit Music….here’s a clip of the Cinco de Mayo show (from about six months prior). As I recall, this Shakedown went on for roughly a half hour, while getting into the Trampled Underfoot jam in the…

Here is a link to download the aformentioned 2007 show at Red Herring, a true gem from the early Zmick archive, again recorded by Ben Valocchi: http://www.archive.org/details/zmick2007-11-02.logitech

My biggest concern is that the free Caribou show at the Krannert is now not at the Krannert and no longer free. But then, I guess if that’s my biggest concern, then I’m doing pretty well—at least I still have potable water! Still, I would prefer it…

Illinois has simply had no luck at all in these Mizzou games. None. I think maybe we’re do for a couple of bounces to go our way. If we get one or two (or sever or eight) breaks, I think it’s a win.

Jason, Savoy could easily join the CPL tax district, which is probably closer to most Savoy residents than the Tolono library is.  But my impression is that Savoy residents as a whole don’t want to pay the cost of the CPL (Tolono’s library taxes are cheaper), even…

Sorry, but I am lagging behind on updates to the map. Also, some construction projects were delayed from their original start date. On a more positive note, I am putting together a map of haunted houses in Central Illinois. I have a few plotted already, and I…

I’ve never gotten the privilege of all the services CPL cardholders get.  I just want to be able to go out of my way to drive to the CPL to check out books, pay fines, maybe buy some coffee, and enjoy the library.  None of those activities…

These days, there is more to using a library than checking out books. At one time, paying into the Lincoln Trails system probably would cover the expenses incurred by other libraries in the system. Now, with Internet, videos, coffee shops, wireless Internet hubs, etc., I suspect the…

(speaking as a Savoy resident)  By paying taxes to support a member of the LTLS, we are paying our “fair share” to use any LTLS library—Tolono, Champaign, Urbana, etc.  This is how library systems work.  The 6% of CPL’s circulation represented by Tolono users is NOT significant…

I read Timbo’s argument. I think the key word is “speculating.“

I would be interested to hear more about the “word on the street”—how are individual hauling companies fulfilling their promise to recycle?

Timbo makes a smart, sound argument. Reread it.

I joined on 09-09-09 after living here over a year, and having to listen to my dad tell me how his best friend is, like, #27 or something crazy like that, and how said friend never lived further than 50 feet from the Illini Inn while going…

And, I might add, no one is being prevented from using the Champaign library. They are just being asked to pay their fair share if they are going to use it as their primary library.

Dan Schreiber avatar

The equation is pretty simple here. If you want social services, then pay the taxes required to run those social services. These things only work if everyone puts in their fair share. As a heavy user of the Champaign Library, I say bravo to this new policy.

Curtis Orchard is always good for an hour or three, especially if you have rugrats.

What is the increased marginal cost of serving a resident of Savoy or Mahomet? I suspect negligible. What is the increased revenue to be realized by this new policy? I suspect very little. Aside from these financial aspects, what are the most probable results from this new…

@Annie: Yeah, my bad. That was the best part! Drinking + memory exercises = fun @Rob: According to Ask the English Teacher, “My dictionary says ‘drunk’ is an archaic past tense of ‘drink.‘“ We’re all about the new grammar around here.

Katie, have the residents of Savoy and Tolono thought about having their taxes raised a little to help their public library expand? That’s a possibility for them. And then everybody wins.
