The Overture: New Year’s Eve Edition

WHAT:  The Dirty Feathers, Elsinore, Temple of Low Men  WHERE: The HighDive ($20) WHEN: Saturday, December 31 at 9:00 p.m. The Dirty Feathers are joined by all of Elsinore this year (last year their NYE show featured a Ryan Groff solo set) and Temple of Low Men to watch the ball drop into 2012.  Expect some new songs from The Dirty Feathers outside of their solid Midnight Snakes material, and surely other antics that accompany their live show as well. And …

MUSIC

The Overture: December 13 - 19

WHAT: Withershins, Epilep[c], That's No Moon, Eyetoadasho, Belly and Harsh, DJ Wesjile, Allspark WHERE: Cowboy Monkey / Radio Maria ($5/free) WHEN: Thursday, December 15th at 10:00 p.m. A dual-venue event, this is a benefit for the Bob Miller Memorial Fund. You can hit up the rock show at Cowboy Monkey for five bucks, or check out hip-hop for free at Radio Maria.

MUSIC

The Overture: November 29 - December 5

WHAT: Smashing Pumpkins Day with Easter, Exiles, the Palace Flophouse, Evil Tents, Withershins, the Chemicals, Mike Ingram, Megan Johns WHERE: Exile on Main St. (FREE) WHEN: Tuesday, November 29th at 5:00 p.m. Remember when Billy Corgan wasn't crazy? Me either. But numerous local fans and musicians will celebrate the good times (and the reissues of Gish and Siamese Dream) tonight at Exile. I know I'll be crossing my fingers for "La Dolly Vita".

MUSIC

The Overture: November 22 - 28

WHAT: Hayley Jane, Cheaper Hits, Avery Strange WHERE: Mike 'N Molly's ($5) WHEN: Friday, November 25th at 10:00 p.m.  Shake off the tryptophan hangover with some good ol' burlesque. Supporting are local rockers Cheaper Hits and the supremely weird Avery Strange.

MUSIC

The Overture: November 15 - 21

WHAT: Coyote Grace WHERE: IMC ($TBA) WHEN: Thursday, November 17th at 7:00 p.m. A co-production of the UP Center and university LGBTQ Resource Center, this show is part of the Transgender Day of Remembrance. Acoustic music and the IMC go hand in hand, so this should be a good one.

MUSIC

The Overture: November 8–14

WHAT: Arrah and the Ferns, Bears of Blue River, Evil Tents WHERE: Mike 'N Molly's ($5) WHEN: Wednesday, November 9th at 9:00 p.m. Arrah wound up dropping their last local date (back in March) for a show with a guarantee somewhere else, but I'm not going to hold that against them ― gotta get paid, right? So come out and get them some money.

MUSIC

The Overture: November 1–7

WHAT: New Ruins, The Chemicals, Icarus Himself WHERE: Mike 'N Molly's ($5) WHEN: Wednesday, November 2nd at 10:00 p.m. Come out to this and relax before you gear up for Folk and Roots this weekend. New Ruins are going to play songs from This Life is Not Ours to Keep, their excellent new album on Hidden Agenda. Also on the bill are the Chemicals, one of the best kept secrets in downtown Champaign.

MUSIC

The Overture: October 25 - 31

WHAT: A.O. Hootenanny with New Ruins, Huck Fate, Morgan Orion, Deathtram, Delta Kings, That's No Moon, Tree Thump, the Painkillers WHERE: Analog Outfitters (FREE) WHEN: Friday, October 28th from 4:00 p.m - 12:00 a.m. Local sound-extraordinaires Analog Outfitters are opening up a storefront and launching a new line of amps -- what better way to celebrate than with a bunch of free music? You even get comedy set from Matt Talbott and Analog's founders, Ben Hay and Ben Juday. We've …

MUSIC

The Overture: October 18 - 24

WHAT: Love of Everything, Common Loon, Horrible Things WHERE: Mike 'N Molly's ($5) WHEN: Wednesday, October 19th at 9:00 p.m. Joan of Arc family member Bobby Burg is back again with his solo project. Almost totally avoiding Tim Kinsella's hyper-literate atonality, the Love of Everything is refreshingly uncluttered indie-pop, a perfect soundtrack for what's sure to a chilly evening.

MUSIC

The Overture: October 11 - 17

WHAT: Man or Astro-man?, Jaill WHERE: Highdive ($15) WHEN: Tuesday, October 11th at 9:00 p.m. The brilliantly-skewed surf-rockers bring their show to the Highdive tonight for a bit of weirdness. Black Lips-ish garage band Jaill kick things off at nine.

Yeah, I’d agree that Transporter Room 3 is the worst house venue I’ve ever seen.

*slow. clap.* Still offering no threat of intelligence…. I know I said I thought you should just write this whole column yourself next year, Isaac, but now that you’ve gone and taken a “part deux” run at it, I’d like to modify my request: Best Music 2013,…

Actually, it’s kind of nice, the quiet.  John Heoffleur’s engaging commentary/dialogue is sorely missed, however. In lieu of someone intelligent saying something, I’ve compiled a list of Honourable Mentions: BEST ROCK BAND: Take Care ::these gentlemen have four completely different sets at their disposal right now (which…

That article almost looks like something out of The Onion

Thanks! I’m looking forward to writing even more….

Did the Crave Truck get a permit to park in city metered spots and city right of way?  Or did they just get a permit?  The city clerk’s office seems to be a suspect here, but it’s not clear they did anything wrong.  Did the Crave Truck…

it’s quite choice. looking forward to seeing how it and its patronage grow and develop over the course of the year.  could be a neat little ecosystem.

“It was at this point, before he started his business, that working with city employees should’ve raised red flags…” But they didn’t because: 1) The City Clerk’s office originally mis-interpreted the rules,  or are indeed re-interpreting them. 2) Champaign’s brick-n-mortar merchants hadn’t yet started whining about The Crave Truck.

I’m in the middle (or the beginning or end, depending on how you look at it) of re-reading Slaughterhouse Five.  What a great companion column.

I don’t know about Gerard and a random police sargeant. My (mild) outrage is based on this: “...he worked closely with Champaign City Clerk Marilyn Banks to make sure he was licensed properly as a transient food peddler, filling out the necessary paperwork and paying a $225…

Local Yocal pretty much nails it here.  I suspect there will be merchants who oppose food trucks because they arguably don’t pay their fair share to locate their trucks in high traffic (high rent) areas.  The food trucks take away business from rent payers, park in city…

I also got to visit Big Grove Tavern during the soft open and definitely enjoyed the pork belly the most of all the dishes I sampled. The cheesy grits and the vinegary pickled vegetables were a perfect compliment to the rich pork belly.

Snell and the little Hitlers of the neighborhood association need to chill out. Legitimate businesses should have the freedom to exist without having to endure the slings and arrows of ignorant and misguided opposition.

Food trucks are the start-up, small businesses of the future for those unable to afford real estate. No surprise, that merchants who pay rent, utilities, and maintenance on a property would despise the traveling competition. Or developers who build more empty retail spaces would want to close…

Not so much far-right Tea Party as a balanced, moderate viewpoint between letting businesses succeed and protecting society with reasonable regulations. In spite of what the city reps are saying, the interpretation of policy on this issue certainly has changed. Letting a business start up under one…

I think it’s neat that SP has turned rightward, now espousing a Tea Party-style frustration with government regulations & taxes.
