Fall Semester Showdown profile:  Skalalitabs

skalalalalallalala

More than a dozen local bands took part in the Fall Semester Showdown series at the Canopy Club last week.  In case you’re not familiar with some of them, or if you missed the series altogether, we’re running capsule interviews with as many of them as would respond to our emails.

Next up: Skalalatibs, who played Friday night with Roses and Sake, Butterfly Assassins, Neoga Blacksmith, The Cellar Door, and the Withershins

“Too Cool for Ska” by Skalalitabs

Smile Politely:  How would you describe your sound to a person who you don’t think will like your music?

Skalalitabs:  Oh, we play a bunch of stuff, a little 50 Cent, some funk here and there, and we’re very witty.

SP:  Is there anything your music has been compared to that you don’t particularly agree with?

Skalalitabs:  Cake.  I like Cake, but some people assume that they’re ska just because they have a trumpet.

SP:  Are there any non-musical influences that one might not expect?

Skalalitabs:  We play a lot of nerdy games like “Magic: The Gathering,“ which teaches us words like “merfolk” and “necromancy.“

SP:  What are the primary factors/influences/motivations that keep you doing what you’re doing?

Skalalitabs:  It’s fun as hell, and we want to move people to get out of their shell and dance.

SP:  What is the best (or worst) thing happening in music today (either local, national or international)?

Skalalitabs:  The best thing happening is probably Gogol Bordello.  They bring a lot of interesting influences together that make for interesting and exciting music and a killer live show.

SP:  Tell us about the worst show you have ever played.

Skalalitabs:  We had a pretty rough one with lots of logistical issues and my bass string broke.  One of our friends bailed us out with a spare though, so it wasn’t too bad.

SP:  What do you have coming up on the horizon?

Skalalitabs:  We hope to start playing more and more groovy reggae and gigging more.  Also, we will soon be distributing our new EP titled “This EP is Known by the State of California to Contain Ska Music!“

SP:  What can people expect from your live show that differs from what is available from your MySpace?

Skalalitabs:  The rhythm and sound quality is way better, for one thing, and you can see our beautiful faces/pelvises.

SP:  Anything else you want to emphasize or get off your chest?

Skalalitabs:  Our song “Gangplank!“ is not a metaphor, and it’s not perverted.

“Gangplank” is a great jam regardeless if it’s a metephor or perveted!  The tempo changes and instumental riffs are fantastic

The UGG boots are excellent products suitable for year-round wear. Many people all know Ugg boots uk? and know they are very popular. But less people know that the Australian brand found international recognition in the 1970s when an Australian surfer named Brian Smith took several pairs…

This also explains why I was starting to think Roses & Sake was a group of strange pagans from Vancouver.  This is when it pays to be a local.  My apologies to the true Roses & Sake, we’ll fix this ASAP!

Ahh, shame on me.  I grabbed it directly off of Mike ‘N Molly’s website.  I’ll see if I can’t get it corrected on here (and maybe pass along the word to them as well).  Thank you, observant reader!

I’m with Brigham regarding the Acrylics set. Very XX-ish. Very good.

I believe there were bands all 26.2 miles of the marathon. But yeah, I’ll read more closely next time ;)

Emma —   This was posted under the Music section, and as such, I think the intention was to highlight the festivals where live bands and DJs would be present.   =)

...and while the Illinois Marathon isn’t quite a “fest”, it takes places in the streets all over CU!   okay, done now.

The marathon is certainly a tough distance, but I imagine that it compares to childbirth. In any event, having completed the former, I will agree that it is an excruciating tastk. Should the opportunity arise, I will let you know how the latter compares.

I’ve always suspected that there’s a direct correlation between projected land use for the Rt 150 corridor [Industrial / Commercial] and the drive to expand 74. See the CCRPC Future Land Use Map for details, and then take a look at who owns land there, and you…

It’s understandable that cash can make us independent. But what to do if somebody does not have money? The one way is to receive the mortgage loans or car loan.

Zelini, I really like this - I’ll try to follow the theory more closely. As they reveal more about Kate (possibly next week), it might give us more perspective.  I agree with your observation about Ben and I think Michael Emerson has done an excellent job conveying his lesser stature.

Surprised you think it will take two wins. I think we have a shot to get in with another loss.  The bubble is just a disaster this year, and we’ll float to the top even with one win.

What if the sideways alternatives are where Jacob actually grants them their wishes, but in ways they didn’t quite expect?  The elimination of one regret. Sayid gets to be with Nadia - although through his brother.  Maybe he ends up with her at the expense of his…

I understood this totally differently than the other people that posted…this is what I got from it: - the more background you have going in, the more of the allusions you will understand when watching - afterwards, you can do a little research to fill in the…

Amen.  When I told people I’ve lost 18 pounds since early October the number one response I get from women is concern.  18 pounds in four months is not unhealthy, quite the opposite for me.  But don’t give up on sugar, or become a vegan, or do…

The whole self-acceptance idea is tricky in itself too. Are we supposed to self-accept by sitting around like bumps on logs, doing nothing but just appreciating and accepting ourselves? Life doesn’t happen like that. I like your point about pushing ourselves to do something greater. Self-challenge and self-reflection…
