Shadowboxer back at it tonight

The Shadowboxer Collective has another unique show in store this evening at Mike 'n Molly's, as Chicago's Them Damn Kids and Bloomington, Indiana's Sam Lowry join forces with our very own Ryan Groff for a 9 p.m. show amidst the cool breezes of the beer garden. It'll probably be below 90 by the time the show starts, so pony up seven bucks at the door, grab a cold one and settle in for some low-key jams that won't overheat you. Here's some info on the out-of-towners:

————————————————————————————————————————————

THEM DAMN KIDS

Home base: Chicago, Illinois

"Bad Decisions" by Them Damn Kids

Former seminarians Chris Darby and Rolland Gairroes (not to be confused with the French tennis stadium) have been performing together off and on since 2001, by themselves and as part of larger collections. They have a new album titled Arm Yourself with Perspicacity on Chestnut Tree Records, and are generally well-behaved. This is the second date on an 11-show tour that will take them as far as Brunswick, Maine.

Smile Politely: How would you describe your sound to someone who's never seen you perform before?

Them Damn Kids: We play a mix of folk, roots, and rock, but more on the mellow side — think Cat Stevens meets Tom Waits ... maybe. I always have trouble answering that question.

Smile Politely:  Have you played in C-U before?

Them Damn Kids: We have played Champaign several times in the past, at Aroma Cafe.

SAM LOWRY

Home base: Bloomington, Indiana

"Manhattan Took Us First" by Sam Lowry

Sam Lowry has been on tour supporting his new, fourth album, With/Without. He's no stranger to the road, playing over 600 shows over the last several years.

Smile Politely: How would you describe your sound to someone who's never seen you perform before?

Sam Lowry: Typically my sound can be summed up as lyric driven Americana with a penchant for darker subject matter. I'll be performing solo [tonight] so it will be a bit more stripped down in nature for this show.

Smile Politely:  Have you played in C-U before?

Sam Lowry: I have had the good fortune of playing the C-U a few times. This year I've been at the Canopy Club twice, first as the opener of the Murder by Death/Fake Problems tour, and then a few months later as the opener on the Asobi Seksu tour. I've also performed there a few years ago as part of Pygmalion Fest, and once several years ago I performed at the Iron Horse as part of a songwriters in the round night with Larry Gates of the band Lorenzo [Goetz].  He still owes me a beer and a shot so hopefully he'll read this and come to the show to repay his gentleman's debt.

Foreigner had Double Vision, now that’s vision.. It is interesting today how diverse people’s music taste has become. Take 107.1 for instance, depending on what time of you’re listening to it you can hear indie, top 40 alternative, hip hop, and alt country all in the same block of…

“Evaporated.“ Never said that but cool…. Yes, I do know. But people have wanted to be Elvis for 60 years. And I think what is hipper these days is the switch around. Ya know, how every one in the band “kind of” plays “everything” and switches around…

i just found this article, and am so happy about it! mark is a wonderful person!!

Cheesy Computers with evaporated Beats and Samples may not be your taste and I can appreciate that…but in some cases they are born out of necessity. Do you know how hard it is to find a drummer these days? Do you know how hard it is to find…

Every band in CU - I realize this is just a cheeky comment, but I wanted to respond anyway. I think this column is more about the scene and the support system than the bands themselves. The last thing I would ever want is for someone to…

Interesting article, John.  I second your comments Doug.  I’d really like to see the two of you do a Siskel & Ebert-style review of albums.  Can SP make this happen? And if Noiseboy could reappear to DJ one day at Mike & Molly’s…

Thank you SP editors for removing a not-so-nice word from Pope’s comment. I was just going to comment on it myself, wondering if we need an article titled “Down with the F-word”. John, very interesting read. Huzzah for well-written local music opinion.

I didn’t know that the LED was created here. That’s awesome.

It’s a total shame this is only during working hours!  It sounds great, but I’m one of those who can’t slip away very readily during the 9-to-5.  Next time, a request: weekend events, please?

After going over this composition I major in a lot on how to draft articles. As a graduate, I have neveraccomplishrd one natural paper and always use custom dissertation. What a shame! But now I have backbone in writing. Thank you.

Nuts. Sorry I saw this, um, 15 minutes before CULitFest (my term!) begins. However, one deficit - no beer. SP.com 1, UIUC 0. In all seriousness, hope it goes well!

This is federal money, yes. But it is money going to a network that is going to be owned by an inter-governmental of the two cities and the University, not by the federal government. If you’re worried about the local governments spying on us, that’s fine, but…
