Smile Politely’s guide to Record Store Day 2014

It is that time of the year again: Record Store Day 2014 is upon us. For all of the great things that happen in the music scene here in Champaign-Urbana, Record Store Day is just one of those days people get behind and support every single year. There’s no downplaying the amount of people that will be out and about on Saturday supporting their local record stores. We’re lucky to have three viable record shops here in C-U.

There will be a ton of live music and RSD 2014 exclusive releases to be picked up, and between Exile on Main Street, Error Records and Record Swap — you should be able to find something to spend your money on this Saturday.

Here is a rundown of live music, exclusive releases, and some tips on our end to help you along your way this Saturday.

EXILE ON MAIN STREET

1 Main Street, Downtown Champaign
Open at 7 a.m. on Saturday

Exile has been the staple of Record Store Day in Champaign-Urbana for quite some time now, offering plenty of live music to go see, in addition to the endless number of records they have in-shop. This is a great time to go grab a release you’ve been waiting/wanting to grab, but just haven’t done so yet, snag the exclusive RSD vinyl (typically limited in their release), or poke around and see what singles/7” albums you come across.

RECORD SWAP

114 E. University Avenue, Champaign

Although there isn’t any live music happening at Record Swap for Record Store Day 2014, there are always excellent options for vinyl lovers. Tons of vintage vinyl, as well as some gems mixed in here and there on the newer end of things are available at this store. If you haven’t done so already, check out our huge feature (part 1 and 2) from a few years back on the history of the shop. In addition, Rebecah put together a shopping guide back in December, and Record Swap was included there as well.

OTHER LIVE MUSIC

Check out the Overture for all the live music happening this weekend, but here are some additional shows happening on Saturday night post-RSD festivities.

Did we miss something? Let us know in the comments on what releases you’re looking at picking up, and if there’s a local release that’s worth mentioning. Happy RSD, folks.
