The Overture: April 6–12

With work, family, and other things, who has the time to find out about the best shows happening in Champaign-Urbana? No need to fear, because the editors here at Smile Politely have taken care of it. Here are the must-see shows of the week:

When: Thursday, April 9

What: LM5 (Local Music Celebration hosted by WPGU)

Where: The Highdive, 9 p.m., cover tba (benefiting local charities)

From the ashes of the Local Music Awards comes LM5. Expect some unconventional and collaborative sets by Curb Service and Santa, Sunset Stallion and Jonathon Childers, Post Historic and Robots Counterfeiting Money, and World’s First Flying Machine with Agent Mos and Liam Bird. When: Friday, April 10

What: The Academy Is, Empires, Evan Taubenfold

Where: Red Herring, 7 p.m., $12

Pop punkers The Academy Is will set up shop in the cozy restaurant/coffee shop as part of their acoustic tour.

What: Lucky Mulholland, Backyard Shark

Where: Bentley’s Pub, 10 p.m., $3

Some solid local indie pop at the Irish pub turned music venue.

When: Saturday, April 11

What: Unemployed Architects, Zach May and the Maps, Jonathon Childers

Where: Cowboy Monkey

Sometimes the second time is the charm. This Saturday show featuring Bloomington-Normal’s Unemployed Architects is a makeup date for a cancelled show featuring the same lineup last month.
