WHAT: Industry New Year Open Mic Night

WHERE: Canopy Club ($2 cover/free for 21+)

WHEN: Monday, Jan. 2nd at 8 p.m.

If you’ve always meant to play at an open mic, there is no better time to do so than tonight at Canopy. Fulfill a new year’s resolution right off the bat by getting up there and making yourself part of the show. This open mic is run by some of the best, and tonight’s show will feature a set by the event’s own runner and organizer, Mike Ingram. Show up, be seen, and step out as a musician.

WHAT: Single Player/Hot Mulligan/Kayak Jones/Eric Stanley (of Euriah)

WHERE: Blips and Chitz ($5)

WHEN: Tuesday, Jan. 3rd at 8 p.m.

Hot Mulligan and Kayak Jones return to the area to play this emo and pop punk show. Also present will be local acts Single Player and Euriah’s Eric Stanley.

WHAT: The Merry Travelers & Kenna Mae

WHERE: Iron Post (donations suggested for touring bands)

WHEN: Thursday, Jan. 5th at 9 p.m.

A rare performance by The Merry Travelers will fill Iron Post with soulful folk music on Thursday. C-U’s recent export Kenna Mae is back in town to open things up with her own folky tunes.

WHAT: Urbana First Fridays

WHERE: Downtown Urbana (admission is free)

WHEN: Friday, Jan. 6th from 4 – 11 p.m.

The organizers of First Fridays don’t skip a beat. In spite of the holiday buzz, they are rolling right into the new year with a full lineup of things to do in Urbana this weekend. Katie Flynn will be bringing her sassy jazz stylings to a tour of the Cohen Building, and that’s just one part of this multi-event party. Food, music and more will be had, and many events are free. WHAT: Lonely Trailer, Bristle, Weed Whacker Johnson

WHERE: Iron Post ($5)

WHEN: Friday, Jan. 6th at 9 p.m.

C-U mainstays Bristle and Lonely Trailer are switching things up at the Post this weekend with their danceable power rock songs. Little is known about Weed Whacker Johnson, so you’ll have to attend to learn more.

WHAT: Airacobra, Ashland, The Radiation Babies

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($7)

WHEN: Friday, Jan. 6th at 9 p.m.

Airacobra bring their self-defined “Luciferian rock and roll” to the Monkey on Friday, with an assist by pop rock group Ashland and garage rock band The Radiation Babies.

WHAT: Body Image / Pryss / Hush 

WHERE: Ghost Planet ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, Jan. 7th at 7 p.m.

Ghost Planet’s first show of the year is of the hardcore variety, and set to put up a stink. Body Image and Pryss are in from Schaumberg and Springfield respectively, and Hush are local. All are prepared to thrash.

WHAT: Sidelined / Old Fox Road / We Love You / Pictures of Vernon / Gadget / Roman Candle Drive By

WHERE: Blips and Chitz ($5 donation for touring bands)

WHEN: Sunday, Jan. 8th at 6 p.m.

Blips and Chitz always offer a great stop for ambitious and hungry touring bands on their way through the area. Sunday’s show will have six different acts on the bill, almost all of which are from outside C-U. Make sure to be on time for this early show so you don’t miss any of the action.
