The Overture: Jan. 25 – 31

With school, work, family and pretending like winter's over, who has the time to find out about the best shows happening in Champaign-Urbana?  No need to fear, because the editors at Smile Politely have taken care of it.

WHAT: Keller Williams

WHEN: Friday, January 29, doors @ 8 p.m., show @ 9:30

WHERE: Canopy Club ($20 in advance)

The jam band world is littered with trash. And by trash, we mean terrible bands that simply don't know when to stop playing and can't write a decent song to save their life. This is precisely why a musician like Keller Williams is such a breath of fresh air... er... reefer smoke. Williams takes his songs seriously, even if the lyrics aren't always that. He has mastered the art of the "one-man-band" and despite the fact that he gets lumped into the jam band world, his songs are such that they'd made any ol' person tap a foot or hum a tune anytime and anywhere. Oh sure — he doesn't know when to stop playing sometimes, too, but it's likely because he's a good enough performer that he just knows how to play to the crowd. A perennial favorite at the Canopy Club, Keller Williams makes for a great show at fair price. Honest.

WHAT: Common Loon, Jookabox, The Duke of Uke

WHEN: Friday, January 29 @ 10 p.m.

WHERE: Mike 'N Molly's ($5)

Our conflicts of interest abound with this show, so take all this with a grain of salt, but: this show will be worth your time. Yes, these are two Nicodemus Agency artists, but both are quite good, actually, in completely different ways. Common Loon are also editors and writers for Smile Politely, and they are on the heels of releasing one of the more anticipated records of the past couple years locally, and are gearing up for a national tour and an appearance at SXSW in Austin come Daylight Savings. We've written about them ad nauseum, so we'll trust that by now, you know whey we'd like for you to attend the show. Jookabox is an Indianapolis based freak-psych act that is often labeled "insane" and "awesome" in the same sentence. Make it an adverb and give it a name if you must, but their latest LP, Dead Zone Boys spent 13 weeks in the Top 50 of the CMJ charts, and is still there, checking in last at #40. Signed with Asthmatic Kitty Records, the likelihood of your being bored during their set is almost non-existent. Not for everyone, but definitely worth a viewing. Locals The Duke of Uke open the show, and theirs is a performance with the price of admission alone.

WHAT: Elsinore EP Release Show w/ Brighton MA, We Landed On The Moon!, Zach May and the Maps

WHEN: Saturday, January 30 @ 8 p.m.

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($7 in advance/ $10 D.O.S./ includes digital copy of EP)

Speaking of anticipated local records, here's one that you can own for the [still extremely reasonable] price of admission. Elsinore will be rolling out The Chemicals on Saturday night, to what will surely be a packed house at Cowboy Monkey, so don't show up at 11 and expect to find a comfortable seat. If you haven't already, check out the lovely video for the title track here. The hard-working locals have been touring almost constantly lately, but they're home for the release of their EP.

If that weren't enough to get you out to the show, then consider the supporting acts: Chicago's Brighton MA and Louisiana's We Landed on the Moon! are Elsinore's fellow-travelers in heartfelt power-pop, and Zach May and the Maps are harder to describe, but no less enjoyable.

WHAT: World's First Flying Machine CD Release Party w/ Flotation Walls

WHEN: Saturday, January 30 @ 10 p.m.

WHERE: Canopy Club ($7; WFFM show included with admission to Pecha Kucha @ 8:20 p.m.)

Can anyone remember the last time two album-release shows happened on the same night? World's First Flying Machine reconvenes after their first out-of-state tour for a release party for their debut album, The House You're Living In. The septet fills a stage and a room with their loose, freewheeling music that probably falls under the big umbrella of Americana.

And heck, if you're going to the show anyway, why not make a night of it and show up for Pecha Kucha beforehand; it's two events for the price of one!

I was all set to pounce on this, but it’s the truth.  There used to be bands in town I was afraid of, like I’d have a heart attack during their set.  There are still some great bands, but they’re pretty and dainty and low in cholesterol. …

I will be at Danu this evening. And seeing as tomorrow - St. Pat’s - is my birthday, I will be celebrating with tons of green and fun!

{username}

Big Blue will actually be on 6-9, despite what is posted elsewhere. Then, hightail it over to Bentley’s!

John Steinbacher avatar

Ahh - good point - I will plug them in the appropriate sections.

Yeeee! This sounds so fun! Any word on covers for any/all of these? Maybe SP could spring for punch cards and some discounts if we make it to all, eh?

...and given the lack of smiley emoticons i chose to employ, that reads far more sarcastically than i ever intended (my apologies).  i actually find this to be a great article and an interesting discussion, seriously : )

Once it leaves the basement, it is then called what? hmmm…....could it be mainstream? accessible? appealing on a mass-level? POP???  Quickly it will become a fad, over-saturate the media, and piss people off.  Then everyone can write articles based on how that shit sucks, too.  chickens are…

In general, I think music is much more interesting now than in 1995. I definitely am very glad contemporary music has expanded beyond the four-piece rock lineup that dominated much of the 90’s. The point of the above isn’t so much about a sound or an instrument…

{username}

2010 is not 1995. I’m not sure why anyone would expect a music scene to remain stationary as the world of popular music moves around it. Also, today, making popular music with mainstream appeal and being innovative and cutting-edge are usually exact opposites.

bhrama- thanks for the promo. it is true, crane and badger will be playing on friday at mike and mollys w/ the chemicals and tractor kings. we will be playing first. show starts at 10pm. come on out. rock will be had.

Nate, No offers to crash but I was wondering if you’d ever considered publishing the plans to your trailer.  You might make a dollar or two especially after you go solar! Let me know if you do it. Sincerely, Don

Not sure if it’s been mentioned here, but they’ll also be playing the Old Rock House in St. Louis on May 22

Interesting about who owns land in the path of the Olympian Drive extension. My comment was in response to ‘Tony C’s remarks about the I-74 expansion. Just who owns land in the 150 [BloomingtonRd]-I-74 corridor?? Because the corridor is zoned for future use as Commercial/Industrial, I am…

Wow, great article.  I wish you the best in your endeavors and hope you have a nice trip.

As an adoptee, I can empathize—although I’m not an international adoptee, and I apologize if I’m assuming too much on the nature of your adoption.  You can feel what you feel, but don’t be too hard on yourself.  When I started a search for my birth family,…

I highly doubt a single dish is vegan at Bombay.  Most Indian dishes use Ghee(essentially clarrified butter) as the base fat. While I guess they could make some dishes with canola oil, I would for sure ask the exact ingredients before I consumed if you are following a vegan diet.

You’re right!  Every runner, in my opinion, is a real runner.

Congratulations on the AG place! In all of your accomplishments, don’t forget what it was like to think a mile was an impossible distance. Getting to the six-mile point takes a lot of training and preparation to acclimate the mind and musculature to so much pounding. Your…

Nice, killer work pretty man…the channeled, one sided collaborated rhyming poem.  An oft forgot genre.   The ruckus was felt even here in my living room, which is normally a safe haven from ruckus.

If the democrats didn’t have Kucinich, and the republicans didn’t have Ron Paul, where would both these parties really stand? These men actually mean what they say.

Joel, thank you for the opportunity to answer these questions and have them posted here. I really appreciate it! Yes, I was thrilled to see that Rep. Kucinich flipped today, so he will has committed to voting yes for health reform. I appreciated his comments which seem…

It appears to me that your reviewer did all that could be expected: she paid her money, saw the play and conveyed her impressions. The review (on the whole, laudatory) may have been rushed, in a generous attempt to publicize the production while it was still available…

Dan Schreiber’s chocolate is simply the best I’ve ever had.  It’s a whole different ball-game; closer to very high-end wine than anything out of Hershey PA.

{username}

That settles it… Im going.

{username}

Vosges is pretty decent chocolate, but you should definitely try the locally-produced chocolate from Dan Schreiber, available (regularly?) at Amara, Caffe Paradiso, and Common Ground.  I believe it is or will be at other places soon.
