The Overture: January 11-17

WHAT: Kottonmouth Kings, Marlon Asher, Whitney Peyton, Chucky Chuck

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($15 advance/$20 door)

WHEN: Monday, January 11th at 8 p.m.

Rap/rock group Kottonmouth Kings have been at it for over twenty years, which is pretty insane to think about. As ridiculous as their style may be, they definitely have been hanging around — and will smoke up the Canopy Club tonight.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: John Coppess, Marten Stromburg

WHERE: The Iron Post (cover)

WHEN: Tuesday, January 12th at 7 p.m.

Two local singer-songwriters take the stage on Tuesday night at The Iron Post — though I’m unsure of whether or not there is a cover charge for this show. Show up and find out for yourself.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Rebecca Rego, Joshua Powell & The Great Train Robbery, Eric Stanley

WHERE: House Show ($5)

WHEN: Tuesday, January 12th at 8:30 p.m.

Rebecca Rego will headline this show at a house in Urbana without the rest of the outfit, The Trainmen, tomorrow night. You might recognize Eric Stanley’s name, as he is the lead singer of local midwest emo dudes Euriah.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Jeff Arrigo, Paul Kotheimer

WHERE: The Clark Bar

WHEN: Wednesday, January 13th at 6:30 p.m.

Two more singer-songwriters performing for an early show at the Clark Bar on Wednesday, Jeff Arrigo and Paul Kotheimer provide the talent.

—————————————————————————————————————————

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Landmark, In Your Honor, Slick Lisp

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($5)

WHEN: Thursday, January 14th at 9 p.m.

Landmark is the new project from Justin Gee and Caleb Means (both of Wicked Walls), and they will join In Your Honor (which is, apparently, a Foo Fighters tribute band) and Slick Lisp.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Ideal DJ Wesjile, DJ Funky Phil, DJ Grapes

WHERE: Mike N Molly’s (free)

WHEN: Thursday, January 14th at 10 p.m.

Funk and soul, all on wax — this is what will be served up on Thursday evening at MNMs.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Nick Thune, Lucas O’Neil, Chris Hightower

WHERE: The Accord (free)

WHEN: Friday, January 15th at 8 p.m.

For the sake of including The Accord, formerly known as The Highdive, and the opening performance that isn’t entirely music — Nick Thune is worth incorporating here. He plays a guitar during his performance, even doing so once at The Pygmalion Festival 2014, and this is the opening night of the new venue. Oh, and it just happens to be free.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Wave Chappelle, Lucien Parker, Satori

WHERE: The Canopy Club (TBA)

WHEN: Friday, January 15th at 8 p.m.

Strange Oasis Entertainment is presenting their the #NextGenTour featuring Wave Chappelle (clever?), Lucien Parker and Satori. The tour has a handful of dates around the country, and stops here on Friday evening. No information about the cost was available, but keep tabs on the Facebook event, linked above, for information.

Rock music infiltrates Memphis on Main this Friday evening with this hard rock outfit from souther Indiana.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Creed Bratton

WHERE: The Accord ($20)

WHEN: Saturday, January 16th at 8 p.m.

Another comedy show listing here, yes — but Creed Bratton from The Office is presenting a night of music and comedy. He’s a legitimate musician, and actually one before he was an actor.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Caleb Cook Band

WHERE: Memphis on Main

WHEN: Saturday, January 16th at 9 p.m.

Folk outfit Caleb Cook Band will perform on Saturday evening, cozy up at Memphis for this one.

EDITOR’S PICK: THE BEAUTY SHOP, REBECCA REGO + THE TRAINMEN
The Accord ($10) — Sunday, January 17th at 9 p.m.

The Beauty Shop has been inactive since 2008, and John Hoeffleur & co. is, well, getting the band back together. The outfit released a few records back in the early 2000s, highlighted by the still-great Crisis Hotline from back in 2004. This is a must-see this week — hell, this year — in Champaign-Urbana music. Tickets are available at $10 at the door, and TBS will be accompanied by Rebecca Rego + The Trainmen.
