WHAT: Tinderbox Circus Sideshow

The Tinderbox Circus Sideshow is the “one-stop shop for all things icky in entertainment.” This means a show goer is in for the bawdiest, most outrageous fun of the carnival variety: sword-swallowing, fire-eating, human pincushions, body piercing weight lifting (ouch and ouch!), and don’t forget a healthy dose of good old-fashioned burlesque. The Subsect will open up this crazy evening that is guaranteed to disgust you in a most delightful way.

Kentucky’s Billy Nelson, co-founder/co-writer of indie synth-folk outfit Whistle Peak, is about to release his first solo album. Water Sports is being called his “post-Genesis Phil Collins record.” Two Legged Zoo and Go Getum will be adding a C-U flavor to this synthy evening.

Trouble Chasin’ is a rap duo consisting of Champaign-based artists Chase Baby and Truth aka Trouble. This late show will also feature Cii La’Cole and Jarrel Young, promising some sweet lines to take you into your Friday.

Funk-rock band Abnormous are getting ready to release an album this summer. This eclectic Champaign band is loads of fun, and fully prepared to bring the funk to The Accord on Friday. With the help of Church Booty, it’ll be cake.

WHAT: The Underwerewolves & Slick Lisp

WHERE: Exile on Main St. (free)

WHEN: Friday, July 8th at 7 p.m.

The Underwerewolves make hilarious novelty rock that has a hint of They Might Be Giants and also very reminiscent of video game music. Their EP Felicia vs. Stegotron is a three-song soundtrack to a comic of the same name also put out by the band. This all-ages show is sure to bring out the laughs.

Krannert Center is continuing their Outside at the Research Park concerts this Friday, this time with the local wacky folksters Bones Jugs and Las Cafeteras, an eclectic Latin act. A number of C-U’s best food trucks will make for a cheap and family-friendly evening.

WHAT: UCIMC Official Mural Unveiling Party

WHERE: Independent Media Center (free)

WHEN: Saturday, July 9th at 12 p.m.

C-U’s Independent Media Center has a brand new mural, and they’re having the official reveal party on Saturday. The kid-friendly event will include a DJ, bounce house, and activities for kids. Come celebrate new art in C-U.

WHAT: The Kickback

Chicago’s indie pop band The Kickback are on the cusp of stardom and poised to make a big breakout. The band has gathered buzz through the support of big name critics, and their first LP was produced by Jim Eno of Spoon. The Inn Keepers and King of the Coast will also be there in support of the band.

WHAT: Rockin’ for the Trail

The City Center will be hosting a benefit concert and auction for the Kickapoo Rail Trail. The Brat Pack will be cranking out 80’s tunes at this event, which is donating 100% of its proceeds to the construction of the trail.

WHAT: Summer Garden Concert with Rebecca Rego and the Trainmen

WHERE: Lake of the Woods Botanical Gardens in Mahomet (free)

WHEN: Sunday, July 10th at 5 p.m.

Rebecca’s second mention this week is for a family-friendly afternoon show in Mahomet. The Summer Garden concerts are another way to enjoy the season with music amongst the flowers.
