WHAT: Illinois Modern Ensemble

WHERE: Krannert Center ($4-10)

WHEN: Tuesday, November 17th at 7:30 p.m.

You may recognize Illinois Modern Ensemble’s (IME) name from a recent performance alongside Feral States, but this Tuesday, they’re the headliners at Krannert. You can’t beat that price, plus they’ll have the theatre going up on a Tuesday.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: The Chainsmokers, Matoma, Shaun Frank, Louis The Child

WHERE: Canopy Club (sold out)

WHEN: Tuesday, November 17th at 8 p.m.

I don’t know much about The Chainsmokers, but Louis The Child has been steadily emerging as the best young DJ duo in Chicago, and that alone should make this show worth watching.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: William Heiles

WHERE: Krannert Center ($4-10)

WHEN: Wednesday, November 18th at 7:30 p.m.

University of Illinois professor of piano, William Heiles, probably has the coolest job title of anyone in the world. On Wednesday, he’ll be tickling the keys at the Krannert Center. Seeing one of the world’s foremost pianists is a relatively rare opportunity, and yet another reason by living in Champaign-Urbana is consistently awesome.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Resinater, Guppy, Anybody But The Cops, Orator

WHERE: Thee Deathtower ($5)

WHEN: Thursday, November 19th at 8 p.m.

Coming off of a spooky Halloween show at Mike N Molly’s to end October, Resinater return to C-U’s show calendar with a Thursday night rager at Thee Deathtower, perhaps the most aptly-named venue for this band. Anybody But The Cops wins an honorable mention award for the best band name in this week’s Overture.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Kamila Gloacki, Greg Jaeger, Justin Cofield, Mathew Schweineke, Johhny Lusardi

WHERE: Mike N Molly’s ($5)

WHEN: Thursday, November 19th at 8:30 p.m.

No, this isn’t an early screening of Star Wars, as the poster would suggest, but rather Mike N Molly’s monthly edition of their Solo Showcase. Take it from Han, though, this is sure to be awesome. Members of Roberta Sparrow, Heel Turn, Nectar and Bad Catman are set to slay Mike N Molly’s upstairs stage.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Craig Morgan

Fresh off of being voted C-U’s best music venue by buzz Magazine, City Center hosts Craig Morgan, a country musician who has had a long and fruitful career with a ton of critical acclaim.

—————————————————————————————————————————

Editor’s pick:

WHAT: C.L.A.W., Bookmobile!, Los Despeinados, Jorts presents RAVECAST1

WHERE: The Highdive ($12)

WHEN: Friday, November 20th at 8 p.m.

CLAW might be the coolest thing in Champaign-Urbana — it’s live amateur wrestling just like we used to watch on TV. Filled with a plethora of jokes and carnage, Champaign Ladies Amateur Wrestling seeks to pack out The Highdive on Friday, aided by Jorts, perhaps Champaign-Urbana’s most unique band to see live.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: The Autocorrect, Vaudevileins, Slick Lisp

WHERE: Mike N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Friday, November 20th at 9 p.m.

The Autocorrect incorporate a goofy/awesome robotic talking track with their show, and as someone who has seen it, I can certainly say that it’s one of my favorite things to witness in C-U’s live music environment. Couple that with newly-formed Slick Lisp, and you’ve got quite the night at MnM’s.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: The Phantom Broadcast, White Siberian Tigers, Ocean Glass, Nick and the Nailed Its

WHERE: Canopy Club ($5)

WHEN: Friday, November 20th at 9:30 p.m.

The Phantom Broadcast have a very busy November and December, as they are playing a ton of shows all over town. Friday, they seek to rock Canopy alongside a stacked lineup of UIUC and C-U favorites: Ocean Glass, Nick and the Nailed Its and White Siberian Tigers.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: DJ Kosmo

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($2 after 11 p.m.)

WHEN: Friday, November 20th at 10 p.m.

DJ Kosmo might have the best DJ name in C-U. Bonus points if it’s a Seinfeld reference, though it’s impossible to say. Come out to Cowboy Monkey before 11 on Friday, and you can hear him spin for free.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: The Will Rogers Band

WHERE: City Center ($10)

WHEN: Saturday, November 21st at 7 p.m.

Will Rogers is something of a local staple/legend, and on Saturday, the City Center will be honoring him by having a reunion of sorts for The Will Rogers Band. I’ve also been told that all kinds of special guests will be in the building Saturday, so don’t miss it.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: We The Animals, Sunjacket, Boycut, Grand Ambassador

WHERE: Mike N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Saturday, November 21st at 8 p.m.

We The Animals always put on one of the best live shows in town, and Saturday they will be joined by Boycut, the project of Urbana musicians Emily Otnes and Joe Meland, as well as Grand Ambassador, a band relatively new to the scene. If you needed a bill that has the most potential to be captivating, this one is for you.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Reed Richards, DJ Belly, Tim Williams

WHERE: Guido’s (free)

WHEN: Saturday, November 21st at 9 p.m.

Guidos’ Underground is a rare setting, where the DJs don’t take requests and instead get to spin whatever they’re feeling. There’s no telling what type of awesome atmosphere can be created by these guys, but I’m sure it will be awesome. Trust your DJs.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Penny Horses, Hot Hand Luke & the Sound

WHERE: The Iron Post (cover)

WHEN: Saturday, November 21st at 9 p.m.

Two of C-U’s best twangy bands, Penny Horses and Hot Hand Luke, will bring a folky style of music to the Iron Post on Saturday if country or indie music isn’t your cup-of-tea. If it is, check these guys out anyways, because they’re both great.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Eminent Slaughter, Spinerip, Ode Vinter

WHERE: Canopy Club ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, November 21st at 9 p.m.

Eminent Slaughter may be the most frightening band name I’ve ever seen. If that seems like something you’re interested in, Canopy on Saturday seems to be the place for you.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Marathon Guitarkestra

WHERE: The Art Theater ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, November 21st at 10 p.m.

The marathon Guitarkestra is another one of those things that is fairly unique to Champaign-Urbana. It’s a true orchestra of guitars (and two drum-sets), and it’s really something to take in. This weekend, their orchestra hits The Art Theater, an extremely unique venue. For five bucks, you can’t beat this.

—————————————————————————————————————————

Fresh off of the announcement of a Kickstarter campaign to fund a new album, Rebecca Rego & The Trainmen are taking their campaign (and music) to the indi go Co-op. Donations will be collected at the show and used for the Kickstarter, as well. Plus you get to see one of Champaign’s favorite bands and most talented singers.
