Second of three Pygmalion Festival Show Series installments, Sharon Van Etten is having a terrific year after the release of her wonderful new record, Are We There, which came out earlier this year on Jagjagwar. Highly recommend checking htat out, as well as her past material like Tramp and Epic. We’ll have an interview of Van Etten to run tomorrow morning, so keep your eyes peeled for that conversation.

Four bands for five bucks on Friday night at Cowboy Monkey. Local-ish outfit A Cool Hand will head this one up, and they’re joined by locals Cheef, as well as 6th Street Brass Band and Pete Stillwell. A bit of a variety for this bill.

Funk outfit out of Bloomington, Indiana/Chicago The Main Squeeze make their way down to C-U. They’re joined by Chicago’s Indigosun, who fall within the same vein as Main Squeeze, and locals the Ars Nova.

A couple of rock/indie rock outfits at Memphis on Main for Friday night. Finer Feelings released their record Gemütlichkeit earlier this year, and Penny Horses have been fairly active as of late.

EDITOR’S PICK: PALLBEARER, TOMBS, VATTNET VISKAR 
The Highdive ($13 advance/$15 doors) — Sunday, October 19th at 8:30 p.m. 

Serious amounts of metal will be taking over The Highdive on Sunday night after a couple of others the week before Pygmalion Festival. This one is another installment in the Pygmalion Show Series, and features excellent doom-metal outfit Pallbearer. They recently released their terrific follow up to their debut Sorrow and Extinction, Foundations of Burden, on Profound Lore Records. This Canadian four piece will bring it on Sunday evening. They’re joined by a couple of other great metal outfits in Tombs and Vattnet Viskar. Tombs released the intense Savage Gold earlier this summer and is also worth a few listens. Pallbearer has been recieving plenty of critical acclaim for this year’s release, and for good reason. Check it out and get yourself out on Sunday evening for some metal in your face.

WHERE: Memphis on Main ($3 with Pallbearer ticket/$5 without)

WHEN: Sunday, October 19th at 11:55 p.m.

If you’re a true champion, you can rally and hit this show after Pallbearer on Sunday evening. A couple of local metal-ish outfits Earth Witch and Resinater will perform starting at midnight after the show at Highdive over at Memphis on Main. It’ll cost you a couple of bucks less if you have your ticket with you from the other show.
