Justine Bursoni hails from Chicago. She tried as hard as possible to leave here, graduating after three years of Art History school. It was Custard Cup (and owning her own home) that forced her to stay. She now lives in downtown Champaign, is working on her master's in art education and works at the Orpheum Children's Science Museum.
Attention all Insight customers in Champaign County: you can say goodbye to your Insight prices. Comcast, the nation's largest cable company, bought out the other half of their partnership with Insight Communications and has fully moved into town. With over 24 million cable customers, Comcast now serves Champaign-Urbana, Peoria, Quincy-Macomb, Rockford-Dixon, and Springfield cable television systems in Illinois.
Comcast is instituting new prices which reflect the change in service as of April 2. The majority of their services and equipment prices will increase between one and three dollars. Fliers have been mailed out to current Insight customers notifying their clients of the price changes.
A local Comcast representative was not available for comment, however, local Insight representative who wished to remain anonymous said, "Comcast has always owned 50% of Insight. So now they are just completely taking us over. They are one of the top cable service providers in the country."
As of January 1, employees currently hired at Insight have remained in their job positions but have switched over as Comcast employees.
Comcast will take over Insight's former building at 303 E Fairlawn Dr, in Urbana.

So glad to have a company that's under federal investigation for internet traffic shaping (mainly in the form of bittorrent throttling), and is notorious for having terrible customer service, officially in charge of the only real cable option in town! Verizon FIOS, please get here soon. Until then, it's time for everyone to start looking into dish options.

And now there's news that Comcast is compressing its HD feeds (not that it really matters much here since they aren't offering dick for HD channels). Here's an interesting link:
http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/12/14/comcast-media-center-gets-creative-with-compression/
This one is also pretty ridiculous:
http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/03/10/comcasts-cfo-claims-that-not-every-hd-channel-deserves-to-be-i/
It's really getting harder and harder to find anything redeeming about this company.

An actual comparison with charts and screen caps of the difference in HD quality following Comcast's choice to compress HD channels:

And more interesting reading on Comcast vs. the FCC:

My dual classic cable/broadband rate with insight with one cable box was $92.75 and was going up to $103 and change. Time to switch to Dish network and stand-alone ATT DSL (stand-along DSL option required if you don't want local phone service). I'll get a dual-tuner HD TV recorder and 21 channels of HD service for over $20 less!!! Plus, I get the Big Ten Network - no brainer.

This whole HD-lite thing has really picked up steam, including hitting some major news outlets. Lots of people have been filing complaints with the FCC, which is awesome.
You can do so here (even though Comcast hasn't even gotten Illinois the promised additional HD channels since taking over, since they suck):

And now it seems that, having told everyone that they've made up with the FCC and stopped bittorrent traffic shaping, they've begun to shape internet traffic in general. This affects web browsing and everything else you could be doing with your connection. This company is completely worthless.
