There's a Champaign County healthcare organization currently in operation that you might not be aware of. It's called Illini Medical Screening Society. The group is a registered University of Illinois student organization with 100+ members. In its own words, the organization "provides the low-income and uninsured citizens of Champaign County a free medical screening service where individuals at risk for disease are suggested to follow-up at local free health clinics." In particular, the group screens its clients for Diabetes, Hypertension …
"Illinois has always stood for the respect and dignity of all people and thought. We are the home of the widest interpretation of free speech and expression. We are the home of spirited debate along the confines of respect and civility. But we do not tolerate acts of intimidation, violence or hate and what threatens one member of our community threatens all of us." —Richard Herman & C. Renée Romano, from the 2009-2010 University of Illinois Student Code The UI Student Code …
A source within the Graduate Employees Organization at the University of Illinois reports that an "overwhelming majority" of the GEO membership voted to authorize a strike. The GEO will officially announce their plans at a press conference on Monday. The GEO is planning to strike beginning November 16, but that schedule is tentative based on what happens in negotiations between the union and the university in the intervening days. The votes were cast from November 4 to 6 by the …
There are currently three community members and former students from Champaign-Urbana, myself, Lindsay Millett, as well as Kathryn Yancey (who will be joining us shortly), living at the Rossport Solidarity Camp in Mayo and helping to fight off Shell. This evening, Thursday June 18, a "Let's Sink Shell Benefit Show" will be held in the basement of the McKinley Foundation on the corner of 5th and John St. in Champaign. All the donations will go to helping the Shell to …
The University of Illinois chapter of the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO) sent out an e-mail to its mailing list on Thursday, Jan. 29, announcing the university's proposal to cut tuition waivers for all graduate students with less than a 33% appointment, which could potentially affect a minimum of 600 graduate employees, according to GEO co-president Kerry Pimblott. The appointment percentage refers to the number of hours a graduate student commits per week to his or her teaching, graduate or research …
Richard Herman stressed in an optimistic tone that this is no time to adopt a mindset that “the sky is falling.” But there was much curiosity and unrest among those in attendance at the University of Illinois’ town hall meeting Thursday night. In an effort to provide transparency in its attempt to resolve the school’s budget shortfalls, an eight-person panel of University of Illinois representatives discussed the issue and then invited the public’s feedback. At least 500 people filled up …
In light of yesterday’s announcement that the University of Illinois has chosen not to construct a proposed 1.5 megawatt wind turbine on the South Farms, university students are marching from the Swanland Administrative Building (located at Sixth and John in Champaign) to the Main Quad beginning at 11:30 a.m. today. The $4.6 million project was to utilize a GE wind turbine for which the university received a contract last week. It was considered a major step for GE to come …
Kristie Davis of Bankier Apartments began receiving calls about leasing for August 2009 in July 2008, before many students had even moved into their current apartments. Leasing for on-campus apartments in Champaign-Urbana debuted in late September this year, as the leasing season continues to begin earlier with each passing year. Many students fear they won’t find an apartment they like if they wait past October, but landlords continue placing classified ads for on-campus apartments even into January.
Drivers on the University of Illinois campus may have a tough time finding parking, but those who park in a space reserved for someone else, particularly in the city of Champaign, might not find their cars when they return. Ignoring or failing to notice a “No Parking” sign in permit areas can cost you a $95 tow fee. Champaign residents like Amy Langendorf, who said she paid the city “close to $600” to reserve a space near her sorority house …

Everyone should consider attending one of our upcoming free health screening events. After a simple fingerstick you will have a physician consultation and receive educational materials about any conditions for which you may be at risk. The whole process will only take 20 minutes, and no appointments are necessary. Please fast for…
Thank you Smile Politely for doing this interview. International law professor Francis Boyle is an amazing person. I fully support his filed complaints against the Bush II administration for their crimes. If these people are not held responsible for their illegal actions, then current and future Administrations…
and the other half? do I detect damning with faint praise? But I get your drift about the six seats sold, although they will be competing for something with a leg up. Not that it would matter to one of the top, um, 20 or so, no…
I’m not sure what I mean, either. I may be echoing the off-the-cuff sentiments of Dean Hurd: It really doesn’t matter if those last six seats were sold to the highest bidder. The six least-qualified people aren’t going to be competing for big dollars. But…
I’m not quite sure what Rob’s somewhat cryptic comments indicate, but I’ll make a guess: the comment about 90 percent of UI grads not being up to snuff is bitterly sarcastic (and rightly so). The point is that the ratings and rankings game is endemic in the…
@Stuart: Speaking as a U of I LAS grad, you learn me. @UrbanaJake: I agree with your anger. BUT, “They could NEVER be part of that 10 percent because they weren’t clouted.“ isn’t true. And since we know you said it to make a point, I get…
Rob, You are Exhibit A in being a drone. No one cares—you are part of a scam. Blacks, Chicanos, others, didn’t get a fair shake. They could NEVER be part of that 10 percent because they weren’t clouted. Now they sit with no law degree and are…
When I was in law school (‘95-‘98) the big firms were interviewing ONLY the top 10% of each class. It said so in black & white on the little cards posted outside the career services office. That’s 18 to 21 people. Why? Because their studied…
Well perhaps I did have a bone to pick, Stuart. Given the Law School scandal has little to do with a prof trying to make a worthwhile point in an international forum. I owe you a beer at your favorite watering hole. Maybe I live in a world…

Pheidippides wasn’t planning on running a marathon; that’s why he died. If he had known ahead of time that he’d be running 26 miles and followed a good training program for a year, stretched properly before the event, had bands and cheering people along the race route,…
Doug, I absolutely agree. I think this might have come across focused on rock because, as you say, rock was the 90s, and we had some innovative rock bands here then. But what I’m really trying to get at is that there’s no way Dirty Projectors, Liars…
John, I’m not sure that the current climate for indie rock stardom is all that favorable for bands who simply rock out. Most of the bands doing it well that are also popular have been around for a while and have a tested identity (I’m thinking Spoon…
Keep us posted on the latter!
Nice article, Emily! When I get to the CU area, I’ll be sure to give this place a try.
The marathon is certainly a tough distance, but I imagine that it compares to childbirth. In any event, having completed the former, I will agree that it is an excruciating tastk. Should the opportunity arise, I will let you know how the latter compares.
I’ve always suspected that there’s a direct correlation between projected land use for the Rt 150 corridor [Industrial / Commercial] and the drive to expand 74. See the CCRPC Future Land Use Map for details, and then take a look at who owns land there, and you…
Zelini, I really like this - I’ll try to follow the theory more closely. As they reveal more about Kate (possibly next week), it might give us more perspective. I agree with your observation about Ben and I think Michael Emerson has done an excellent job conveying his lesser stature.
Surprised you think it will take two wins. I think we have a shot to get in with another loss. The bubble is just a disaster this year, and we’ll float to the top even with one win.
What if the sideways alternatives are where Jacob actually grants them their wishes, but in ways they didn’t quite expect? The elimination of one regret. Sayid gets to be with Nadia - although through his brother. Maybe he ends up with her at the expense of his…
This also explains why I was starting to think Roses & Sake was a group of strange pagans from Vancouver. This is when it pays to be a local. My apologies to the true Roses & Sake, we’ll fix this ASAP!
Ahh, shame on me. I grabbed it directly off of Mike ‘N Molly’s website. I’ll see if I can’t get it corrected on here (and maybe pass along the word to them as well). Thank you, observant reader!
I’m with Brigham regarding the Acrylics set. Very XX-ish. Very good.
i think the roses & sake link is actually: http://www.myspace.com/rosesnsake
Very nice preview…I’m stoked to be seeing The Young Republic
I understood this totally differently than the other people that posted…this is what I got from it: - the more background you have going in, the more of the allusions you will understand when watching - afterwards, you can do a little research to fill in the…

“Adam Scott, original author of the Bulls Balls article, did not respond when asked to comment on this decision, probably because his email now filters out messages with the phrase “Bulls Balls” in them.“ And he should, as he put up a picture of an imitators product…
