Shared spaces for working it out

featured_post

Local software architect Susan Potter was feeling lonely working from home. Unmotivated and distracted, she was having trouble getting work done. She had tried business suites, but found them too nondescript and uninspiring. She had looked into renting an office, but was daunted by the cost. Finally, she heard about coworking, a recent trend where freelancers, entrepreneurs, remote workers, and others share one big office space, paying a fee (usually by the month) for a desk, access to the internet …

HIV and AIDS in C-U, part three

There are some people who let suffering get the best of them. Mike Benner is not one of those people. Benner is the interim office manager at the Greater Community AIDS Project in Champaign. He answers the phone cheerily every time, and his speech is peppered with laughter. He has deep brown eyes, a neatly trimmed beard and close-cropped charcoal hair. He’s also HIV-positive. “One of the reasons why I’m readily willing to let people know about my status is …

HIV and AIDS in C-U, part two

At a recent board meeting of the Greater Community AIDS Project, Mike Benner announced that one of the residents of “Champaign House” had been missing for five days. “We haven’t heard or seen him since the eighth of this month,” Benner said. “I did go up there and check to make sure there was no corpse or anything like that.” Although he had failed to check in as requested, the missing resident had returned to the house by April 17. …

HIV and AIDS in C-U, part one

For HIV and AIDS sufferers in Champaign-Urbana, taking care of their health requires a team of professionals. Marla Francisco, who is 46 years old and HIV-positive, moved to Champaign from Indianapolis in fall 2002. She contracted HIV in 2004 after what she called a “binge”: a relapse into using crack cocaine, during which she exchanged sex for drugs. She has been taking a drug called Atripla, which combines three different HIV medications into one, for about nine months, with minimal …

C-U Public Health bans home baked goods at the Market

featured_post

In the 1970s, my mother encouraged me and my sister to bake cookies and breads and sell them at our family's booth at the Champaign farmers' market so that we could earn money for college. For the last several years I have watched Alexandra Wright do the same thing at the Market at the Square in Urbana. But as good as Wright's peach muffins and blonde brownies are, I won't be buying them from her this year. And neither will …

Champaign County school tax referendum vote is tomorrow

featured_post

"Shall Champaign County be authorized to impose a retailers’ occupation tax and a service occupation tax (commonly referred to as a “sales tax”) at a rate of 1 percent to be used exclusively for school facility purposes?" Students and faculty alike may want to pay close attention to the outcome of the elections on Tuesday. A proposed school sales tax increase to further fund school-based projects for all Champaign County schools will be on the April 7 Champaign County ballot. …

Local schools offered comprehensive sex ed

The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District has independently placed new curricula in the hands of teachers and social workers throughout Champaign County, and Champaign and Urbana school districts are working to incorporate more “comprehensive” sex education curricula into classrooms. The Health District recently spent about $5,000 of grant money from the Illinois Department of Public Health on a sex education program called "Our Whole Lives" (OWL). The district is also distributing a curriculum developed by the public health department of King …

The Illinois Marathon Thinks You’re Cute

On April 11, the inaugural running of the Illinois Marathon will have the streets of Champaign-Urbana choked with people wearing tiny shorts. In addition to the 26.2-mile character builder, there's also a half marathon, 5k Fun Run/Walk, marathon relay and shorter races for the kids. The race begins near the Assembly Hall at 8 a.m. From there, the courses range over hill and dale through the U of I campus, the arboreal beauty of Urbana, and the shin-rattling brick streets …

Prostitution in C-U, Part Two

featured_post

This is the second of a two-part article on prostitution in Champaign-Urbana. Part one, about Champaign, appeared yesterday and is available here. The combined forces of the Champaign, Urbana and University of Illinois police have arrested four prostitutes in 2008. In the past five years, a total of 35 prostitution arrests have been made in the Champaign-Urbana area, 33 of which were made by Champaign police. Lieutenant Bryant Seraphin of the Urbana Police Department said that since a motel at …

Everyone should consider attending one of our upcoming free health screening events. After a simple fingerstick you will have a physician consultation and receive educational materials about any conditions for which you may be at risk. The whole process will only take 20 minutes, and no appointments are necessary. Please fast for…

Thank you Smile Politely for doing this interview.  International law professor Francis Boyle is an amazing person. and the other half?  do I detect damning with faint praise?  But I get your drift about the six seats sold, although they will be competing for something with a leg up. Not that it would matter to one of the top, um, 20 or so, no…

Rob McColley avatar

I’m not sure what I mean, either.   I may be echoing the off-the-cuff sentiments of Dean Hurd: It really doesn’t matter if those last six seats were sold to the highest bidder. The six least-qualified people aren’t going to be competing for big dollars.    But…

I’m not quite sure what Rob’s somewhat cryptic comments indicate, but I’ll make a guess: the comment about 90 percent of UI grads not being up to snuff is bitterly sarcastic (and rightly so).  The point is that the ratings and rankings game is endemic in the…

@Stuart: Speaking as a U of I LAS grad, you learn me.  @UrbanaJake: I agree with your anger.  BUT, “They could NEVER be part of that 10 percent because they weren’t clouted.“ isn’t true.  And since we know you said it to make a point, I get…

Rob, You are Exhibit A in being a drone. No one cares—you are part of a scam. Blacks, Chicanos, others, didn’t get a fair shake. They could NEVER be part of that 10 percent because they weren’t clouted. Now they sit with no law degree and are…

When I was in law school (‘95-‘98) the big firms were interviewing ONLY the top 10% of each class. It said so in black & white on the little cards posted outside the career services office.   That’s 18 to 21 people.   Why? Because their studied…

Well perhaps I did have a bone to pick, Stuart. Given the Law School scandal has little to do with a prof trying to make a worthwhile point in an international forum. I owe you a beer at your favorite watering hole. Maybe I live in a world…

The whole self-acceptance idea is tricky in itself too. Are we supposed to self-accept by sitting around like bumps on logs, doing nothing but just appreciating and accepting ourselves? Life doesn’t happen like that. I like your point about pushing ourselves to do something greater. Self-challenge and self-reflection…

Tracy, I think there are two halves to this. Even if you are not familiar with the “history of the American film,“ you are always a few Google strokes away from digging up the basics on iconic films and actors that would have registered a big “A-HA!“…
