Creative solutions: a look at Portland’s Dignity Village

Read Part One and Part Two of the Safe Haven series. Homelessness: Not in Our Town. This seems to be the approach some people take to the homeless living on the fringes of our community; they'd prefer to oust homeless people from society and deny the existence of the current housing crisis. But the problem of homelessness exists — in Champaign-Urbana and in every city around the globe. The challenge lies in how we, as a community, respond to the …

Rest for the weary?: A closer look at C-U’s shelter system

Read Part 1 of this series on the C-U Tent Community from last Thursday, or go on to Part 3. "...Champaign and Urbana have hardly been unsympathetic in trying to help those who need assistance," wrote the News-Gazette's editorial staff in "Time to fold up ‘tent city,'" found in last Tuesday's edition. "Shelter, some provided by volunteer and taxpayer-funded organizations, is available." People are responding to Champaign's Safe Haven tent community with questions like: "Why don't you just go to …

Safe Haven: rest for the weary

featured_post

For years, homeless people have been camping in vacant lots, by the railroad tracks, and in other spots around Champaign. Now, some of those people have decided to band together in community. Although the idea of a tent community is new to Champaign-Urbana, these sorts of communities have been popping up all over the country and are being compared to the Hoovervilles of the Great Depression. Various camps have been reported all along the West Coast — in Washington, Oregon, …

Eat the View: Revisiting the Victory Garden Ideal

"1500 Miles / 400 Gallons / SAY WHAT?" reads the handmade sign in Roger Doiron's yard. From Scarborough, Maine, 41-year-old Doiron is the founder of nonprofit organization Kitchen Gardeners International, started in 2003 as a virtual community for gardeners around the globe. KGI is part of the locavore movement — encompassing those who think globally, but eat locally. Doiron's yard sign refers to the average distance food travels from field to fork and the gallons of oil used to feed …

You mean, once they’ve paid $140 worth of nickels and dimes in one calendar year the CPL issues them a waiver?   I’ll bet you’d get little argument from the CPL.

Not to be a broken record, but you, too, should complain to the county board. If you want recycling, and the county is not providing it, then that’s the place to direct the complaint. For far too long, the county board and the city councils have focused…

I live in a housing community in a part of Urbana that is not considered within the city limits.  The garbage company the community uses does not take recyling; therefore, I have used the Hagan St. facilities for two years.  When it closes, I would like to…

This will be a real battle and interesting to see how it comes out as fast food unions are not the norm. but it certainly is needed.

Why not charge the Tolono and Mahomet system users the difference between the dues they pay to their home system and what the Champaign folk pay?  They make a good point that they are already paying dues to a LTLS, so why should they have to pay…

Attention Artists: NEW re-use items art supply store in town

Located at 28 E. Springfield, off of Water Street, The I.D.E.A. Store is a place where artists, educators, recyclers, and friends can find re-use materials for the projects that fill our lives. A place where eco-friendly is more than an idea ― it's what we do.

The I.D.E.A. Store is an earned-income enterprise venture of the Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation. Along with having supplies available, The I.D.E.A. Store will also be available for birthday parties, collection parties, workshops, classes, and will be working closely with indi go artist co-op for future art shows.

Click here to find all of the items that they are accepting (.pdf file). Of course, any unique item that they haven't considered in this list will also be considered. The CU Schools Foundation is a 501c3, so your donation is tax deductible.

At what point did the LTLS eliminate user fees for patrons visiting libraries other than their own local?   I remember paying a fee at Champaign when I was a tiny tot. I also remember being surprised when Noah & Adriel Elanor came over for dinner and…

If they want a good paying job, let me suggest that they start by choosing a career outside of the fast food industry.  And if they wanted a better deal, they should have joined a real union, and not the hipster-anarchist clown act that is the IWW.
