Carol J. Mitten has been named Urbana City Administrator

The position has been vacant since 2007. From the press release:

Urbana Mayor Diane Marlin announced today that Carol J. Mitten will assume duties as City Administrator in early June of this year. Ms. Mitten was selected from a field of over 60 applicants following a nationwide search. She currently serves as Deputy County Manager in Arlington County, Virginia where she oversees economic development and public works, including transportation and sustainability projects. Her prior experience includes management responsibilities with the Department of Homeland Security, the National Park Service, and the District of Columbia in addition to 20 years’ experience in real estate appraisals and valuation of historic properties. She attended the Naval Academy and earned a BA and MBA from The Ohio State University.

“I am thrilled with the opportunity to work and live in Urbana. It is a wonderful community, and I look forward to advancing common goals for a safe, healthy, sustainable city through thoughtful growth,” Mitten said Tuesday.

“Carol Mitten has a reputation for working with stakeholders to create a shared vision, rolling up her sleeves, and going to work. By all accounts, she’s fair, consistent, transparent and responsible,” added Marlin. “I believe she will foster innovation and creativity to help us meet the needs of the community while Urbana grows and thrives.”

The Urbana City Administrator position has been vacant since 2007. Marlin made filling the position a top priority of her first year in office, citing the need for professional management of day-to-day operations. The City engaged Slavin and Associates to conduct the candidate search and sought input from City employees, Urbana City Council members, and the public through a series of interviews and public meetings.

The new City Administrator will be included on the list of annual staff appointees submitted for Urbana City Council approval at the May 21st Council meeting.
