Public libraries choose Maltese Falcon for Big Read 2009

Through a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts, the two main libraries in Champaign County have decided to promote the 1930 novel, Maltese Falcon, by Dashiell Hammett, for this year's Big Read.

The idea behind the promotion is simple: try to get as many people in the community to participate in a shared experience of reading the same novel at the same time. Accompanying the read, our very own P. Gregory Springer will be hosting and introducing a a screening of the film by the same name, starring Humphrey Bogart, at the Virginia Theatre on April 30, at 7 p.m.

For more information visit cubigread.org or contacting the Champaign Public Library at 217/403-2070 or The Urbana Free Library at 217/367-4405.

Why the law fest on Main & Race?

I was walking through downtown Urbana today, enjoying the great weather, when I was reminded of something that has always bothered me.

Why are there 4 different law offices on the corner of Main and Race?

It looks like some sort of gas station stand-off or McDonald's vs Burger King real estate war. Can anyone shed some light on the situation? Employees? Partners? Other confused passerby?

Now, if I only hadn't canceled HBO when The Wire ended ...
