Champaign and Urbana Park Districts celebrate National Recreation and Parks month

Similar to chocolate and puppies, parks are a universal good. As such, July is National Recreation and Parks month to celebrate the existence of patches of grass and combine to make any city, including both Champaign and Urbana, great.

To celebrate, both CPD and UPD will be hosting activities for their joint initiative, “Exploring fun together”, all throughout the month of July.

“Exploring Fun” During July for National Recreation and Parks Month

“Exploring Fun Together” is the Urbana and Champaign Park Districts’ message to share with the community this July, which is National Recreation and Park Month. The districts are teaming up to encourage community members to discover the power of play and adventure by visiting local parks and attending activities.

The two districts are celebrating National Recreation and Park Month with a wide variety of recreation opportunities in Champaign and Urbana, from live music, and aquatics, to boating, fitness, and leisure activities. Some events to look forward to in July include:

  • Concerts in Champaign and Urbana parks
  • Movie Nights in Douglass Park and at Crystal Lake Park Family Aquatic Center
  • Folk & Roots concerts
  • Pop-up programs
  • Youth Summer Theater Performance, Seussical

Both park districts already work hand in hand on youth sports and Champaign-Urbana Special Recreation, according to the Urbana Park District Marketing Manager Dana Mancuso,

“We have a reciprocal agreement that allows residents to enjoy a greater variety of options in both communities, so it was a natural fit to celebrate National Parks and Recreation Month together in one of our busiest summer months,” said Mancuso.

“Together we developed a joint webpage featuring activities from both park districts that take place during July,” said Chelsea Norton, Director of Marketing for Champaign Park District. This webpage can be found at http://bit.ly/cuparksmonth

Since 1956 the National Recreation and Park Association has celebrated July as National Park and Recreation Month. This year’s theme is “Get Your Play On”. Whether you move for exercise or take it easy at free concerts, be sure to celebrate with your park district and explore fun together.
