It’s time to take down the Christmas tree; here are ways to dispose of it

I’ve been a fake tree person for many years now. But, for those of you who put a fresh evergreen in your living rooms, this is important information for disposing of said tree in an environmentally friendly way. No matter where you live, make sure your tree is out of the stand, free from all decorations, and not in a bag.

Urbana residents:

Pickup is this week, January 6-10. Your tree should be on the curb by 6 a.m. on your usual U-Cycle day.

Champaign residents:

Pickup is January 13th. Have your tree on the curb by 6 a.m. that day.

If you miss your pickup day, Champaign County residents can drop off trees free of charge at Landscape Recycling Center throughout January and February. The trees are turned into acidifier mulch.

Champaign County Forest Preserve District will also accept trees through January 19th, at these sites open from 7 a.m. to sunset. There will be signs directing you to the drop off.

Lake of the Woods, Mahomet: West maintenance entrance off Rte. 47.
Homer Lake Forest Preserve: Near the Maple Sugar Grove.
Middle Fork River: Maintenance building.
