If you missed Matsuri at Japan House last month — and if you did I’m very sorry, it’s an amazing event — here is another opportunity to experience this campus cultural center. This year’s Matsuri coincided with the 20th anniversary of Japan House as we know it, in it’s current location on Lincoln Ave., and each year they do more outreach into the community. This is one example of this outreach.
Japan House will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 13th. Guests can see their collection of international tea ceremony objects, and check out Ikebana arrangements by U of I students enrolled in one of Japan House’s courses.
Rob Chappell, Assistant to the Honors Dean, ACES Academic Programs, will give a presentation at 2 p.m., “Light from the East: A Medieval Syriac Tale of Ancient Japan?” A Q&A will follow.
There will also be several tea ceremonies happening throughout the day. There are a limited number of tickets available online, but most will be sold that day at Japan House. So make sure to get there a bit before your preferred time: 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 3 p.m., or 4 p.m. If you plan to participate, they request that you bring clean white socks to wear (if you don’t have them they have some to borrow, and I’m sure they are clean and lovely, but seriously just bring your own).
