Parkland College Theatre announces open auditions for the musical comedy How I Became a Pirate.
The production is based on the children’s book How I Became a Pirate, written byMelinda Long with illustrations by David Shannon. The musical will be directed by Kyle A. Thomas.
Auditions will b held Saturday, August 24: youth auditions (ages 9-14) at Noon; adult auditions 1:00 – 4:00 PM. Callbacks, if needed, will be held on Sunday, August 25, at 2:00 PM.
Casting pirates (ages 18+) and one child (age 9+). Kids and adults are asked to prepare a song (16-32 bars). Please bring sheet music for the accompanist. At the audition, adults will be asked to perform a short monologue of their choosing (optional for youth.) Audition will also consist of readings from the script.
No appointment necessary. Kids are asked to arrive a little before noon to fill out audition forms. Auditions are open to all members of the community, including Parkland and U of I students. Both males and females are invited to audition.
Performances of How I Became a Pirate will be October 3 – 12.

Character Descriptions:
JEREMY JACOB – a boy of about 10
BRAID BEARD – the Pirate Captain; a man of girth with a “braided beard” on his chin
SWILL THE PIRATE – slight build with wire-rim eyeglasses; philosophical; intellectual; gets blamed for everything that goes wrong
SHARKTOOTH THE PIRATE – foreboding; scowling grin; wears a patch on eye, but yet a “sensitive guy”
PIRATE PIERRE – talks with a French accent; the ship’s cook; enjoys fine French cuisine
MAX THE PIRATE – he wears a stuffed Parrot on his shoulder
PIRATE SEYMOUR BRAUNSCHWAGGER – A typical Pirate First Mate
PIRATE SCURVY DOG – A typical Pirate Second Mate…with a tendency to “bark”
