Sarah van Gelder, co-founder and editor of YES! Magazine, will be In-Residence at Unit One/Allen Hall October 18-22

Sarah van Gelder speaks and writes on innovative approaches to today’s biggest challenges. Van Gelder is co-founder and editor at large of YES! Magazine and YesMagazine.org, which reframe the biggest problems of our times in terms of their solutions. Online and in print, YES! outlines a  path forward with analysis, tools for citizen engagement, and stories about people working for a better world. Van Gelder has been a television and radio producer, a community organizer, and founder of a cooperative of food co-ops that linked organic farmers to urban markets.

All events are free and open to the public and take place in Allen Hall, 1005 W. Gregory Drive, Urbana.

Free parking is available after 5 p.m. in the garage across the street.

Sunday, October 18th
7 p.m. – YES! Magazine and the #EdgeOfChange (in the South Rec Room)
YES! Magazine looks for answers to problems such as climate crisis, inequality, and exclusion. Hear about the impact of focusing on gratitude and solutions and learn about Sarah’s 5-month road trip to find the edge of change.

Monday, October 19th
7 p.m. – Climate Crisis, Climate Justice, and Imagining a Post-Fossil Fuel Future (in the South Rec Room)
What will life be like in a post-fossil fuel future and why do we need to get there fast?

Tuesday, October 20th
7 p.m. – How Do We Get to a Truly Just Multiracial Society? (in the South Rec Room)
Racial exclusion and violence run through our history; what does racial justice and reconciliation look like?

9 p.m. – Tea Time: Careers that are about making a difference (in the guest apartment)
Share your hopes and dreams, and exchange ideas with others about the pitfalls and opportunities of working for the common good. Tea and snacks provided.

Wednesday, October 21st
7 p.m. – Inequality and Sustainability: A New Economy Emerging (in the South Rec Room)
How can we transform the economy to address inequality and concentrations of wealth and power? What new democratic models are emerging?

9 p.m. – Tea Time: “On the Record” (in the guest apartment)
Sarah will ask YOU questions about how you see the world, your future, and the big crises we face. It will be “on the record” meaning she will audio record the discussion and may quote you for articles and a book she is writing. Tea and snacks provided.

Thursday, October 22nd
7 p.m. –Mind/Body Health: New Insights into Sources of Real Well Being (in the South Rec Room)
Our health is dependent on healthy relationships with those around us and with our internal biome.

9 p.m. – Tea Time (in the guest apartment)
Come hang out and say goodbye. Tea and snacks provided.
