Smile Politely

Smile Politely now seeking Music Editor

We are currently seeking a new editor for our Music section. The position requires a deep knowledge and understanding of the past and present local music scene in Champaign-Urbana.

The Music Editor at Smile Politely is responsible for the following weekly duties:
Writing the Overture column, a rundown of live music in and around C-U.

  • Curating the Music section, managing and soliciting contributions from community writers.
  • Writing articles in the form of performance and album reviews, interviews, previews of upcoming performances, and more in relation to the music scene.
  • Recruiting writers to contribute to the Music section.
  • Contributing to the SPlog with information relevant to the music community.

The Editor is compensated financially with an honorarium and pay per article written, but this is not a part-time position. The position requires roughly 5-8 hours per week, give or take.
An ideal candidate is fully engaged with the local music community, interested in perpetuating this component of C-U’s culture within the magazine, recruiting writers, and generally excited to be involved with the magazine as a community journalism project.

If you’re interested, please email us at [email protected] under the subject “Music Editor Applicant”, with  relevant information about yourself, a resume, and any writing samples you might have. If you don’t have writing samples, that’s okay — just give us a sense of your interests and abilities.
