The Social Justice Committee at Urbana High School (UHS) is collecting women’s and men’s formal wear and accessories to stock an affordable/vintage boutique for their fellow students to use for prom should they have the need.
Working with English teacher and Social Justice Committee chair, Rachel Moyer, the Social Justice Committee is working on soliciting donations from student organizations at the University of Illinois, local vintage shops, and the C-U community.
“Students serving on the Social Justice Committee decided that prom, as a quintessential high school experience, should be an accessible and inclusive one for all students,” Moyer wrote in an email. “Students’ serious sense of style is a strength that students bring to UHS and now they are sharing that asset by hosting a hip boutique that sells up-cycled, affordable dress clothes, shoes, and accessories.”
The group is asking for men’s and women’s gently-used dresses, dress pants, shoes, accessories, etc. In other words, items that would be appropriate for students to wear in order to look their best at prom. This event doubles as a Social Justice Committee fundraiser in that all proceeds from the Boutique will go to Social Justice Committee, which is comprised of students, faculty, and community members.
