Q&A with Matt O’Neal

Matt O'Neal spent the last few weeks of summer playing basketball at the Ubben. The other participants were all members of the Illini basketball team. Matt was hoping to spend his senior year as a walk-on, but when the official practices started in mid-October, he learned that the team wouldn't be taking walk-ons.

I asked readers what questions they'd like to ask Matt about his experience.

1. Were you offered scholarships out of HS, and why did you choose to come to Illinois?

I was recruited by a number of division III programs in the Chicago area, and a couple of division II schools as well. I never played AAU ball over the summer, so I never got the exposure you need to play D1. I was on the verge of going to play at North Central College in Naperville, Ill., but when I had the chance to go to Illinois, I decided to give up basketball. Illinois was the one school that I had always dreamed of attending, and when I got in I had to jump at the chance.

2. Did you play a lot with Alex (Legion) at the ARC?

Not very often. More so in the first month of every school year before the team has started official practice. They have more time off then, and thats when they typically go up to ARC.

3. Is Alex a friend of yours? Do you hang out with the team/some players? Do they all hang out together or is it more like small groups. (One guy guessed if Alex is a loner and doesn't hang out with the rest of the team.)

I didn't know Alex very well before he asked me to come to open gym. But, I did get to know him and the rest of the guys much better throughout the process, and I do consider them friends now. There were a few guys I talked to more than others (Alex, Bubba having gone thorough the walk on process), but they are a great group and do get along well, and all hang out often outside the gym. Alex, along with the freshman, being new to campus, have fit in very well and are all liked by the older guys.

4. Who was the hardest guy to defend?

I mainly guarded big men, and of them, Mike Davis, no question. His length and speed together made him very tough, plus his shot is so high thats is nearly impossible to block.

5. What kind of training is involved in summer workouts?

The coaches were not allowed to be present during open gyms, but I did have the chance to speak with them. I spoke most often with Coach Howard, and just after a few conversations with him, its easy to see why he is so well liked and why he is having such success with recruiting. He's extremely easy to talk to, down to earth, and after meeting him just once it feels like you are talking to someone you've known since childhood.

7. Is DJ (Richardson) the real deal?

All of the freshman are the real deal. They are highly touted, and people are expecting big things from them, and they should be. Of the four of them, what stands out the most is their raw athleticism and overall basketball IQ, two things that can't be taught, and that's what makes them so special. Not to mention they all compliment each other well, and each bring something different to the table.

8. Was there any reason they didn't take you? Did coach say?

I was not told why. Being a senior was the determining factor, in my opinion, and the already surplus of big men with similar games on the team.

9. Where are the best pick-up games cuz I need some competition.

Try ARC on Friday afternoons during basketball season.

10. Did any of the old guys ever stop by and join in — Dee, Deron, Randle, The Rev (Powell), HRF (Frank Williams), Kendall (Gill)?

Deron did play and workout with the team one day, but unfortunately I had class. I did not hear anything about the other guys coming by.

11. Did you know that Nick Smith was the tallest player in Illini history?

Yes, I've also heard Mike Tisdale eats 9,000 calories a day.

12. Who will take care of rebounds this year?

All of the guys are going to have to rebound for their to be improvement upon last year, including the guards. From what I saw Demitri has shown that he is no longer afraid to hit the glass, and Brandon Paul isn't afraid to go inside and rise up with the big guys to pull down a rebound.

13. What's in your future?

I have a friend who manages the womens Illini basketball team, and was asked to help practice with the team every morning. So I will be doing that to stay in shape along with working out up until graduation. I've worked summers at a country club for the past three years, and one of the members is an NBA owner, so I got to know him very well and he was promised me a job after graduation. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Great interview. Matt brings some unique insight to common questions. He seems like a nice, smart guy. Too bad it didn’t work out for him, but, as we’ve all said, at least he got the opportunity.

By the way, I thought Tisdale consumed a meager 6,000 calories per day, not 9,000. Could my memory of his caloric threshold be faulty from the lengthy offseason layoff? Wait, how tall was Nick Smith? And who supposedly dunked on Shaq? Crap ...

Illinois has simply had no luck at all in these Mizzou games. None. I think maybe we’re do for a couple of bounces to go our way. If we get one or two (or sever or eight) breaks, I think it’s a win.

Jamie, you gave me goosebumps talking about the race with Rachel Alexandra and Life at Ten, wish I could be there!!  Go Rachel!!!!!

Beat Missouri and there is validity here, but until this team wins a game it should not, it is all speculation.

I think any conversation about the limits of the human body are innately limiting.  As a non-yoga guy, seeing a skilled yoga person twist his or her body in unthinkable ways challenges my ideas of what the body can and cannot do.  Heck, seeing George Clooney double over and…

{username}

But couldn’t you receive the same benefits (balance, muscle strength, etc.) from doing yoga barfeoot?  From everything I’ve read, the Vibram Five Fingers seem to limit the distance you are able to run, and I am not convinced that is such a good tradeoff.   Heck, Pheidippides…

The thing people don’t realize about barefoot running/ five fingers before they try it is that they have been completely isolated from their environment by their shoes. For example saying that hard surfaces like concrete are a recent invention., In the summer trails with a lot of…

Rob, Zola asks you to read further: “I no longer run barefoot,“ she said. “As I got older I had injuries to my hamstring. I found that wearing shoes gives me more support and protection from injuries.“ http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2005/aug/10/southafrica.past1

Many people, including myself, run barefoot on concrete, asphalt, grass, and dirt.  No problems.  You actually end up with LESS impact than if you were shod in crazy cushioned/supportive shoes.  Your body adapts and you land with less force.  Think short, quick strides with bent knees.  I…

Jason, Savoy could easily join the CPL tax district, which is probably closer to most Savoy residents than the Tolono library is.  But my impression is that Savoy residents as a whole don’t want to pay the cost of the CPL (Tolono’s library taxes are cheaper), even…

Sorry, but I am lagging behind on updates to the map. Also, some construction projects were delayed from their original start date. On a more positive note, I am putting together a map of haunted houses in Central Illinois. I have a few plotted already, and I…

I’ve never gotten the privilege of all the services CPL cardholders get.  I just want to be able to go out of my way to drive to the CPL to check out books, pay fines, maybe buy some coffee, and enjoy the library.  None of those activities…

{username}

These days, there is more to using a library than checking out books. At one time, paying into the Lincoln Trails system probably would cover the expenses incurred by other libraries in the system. Now, with Internet, videos, coffee shops, wireless Internet hubs, etc., I suspect the…

{username}

(speaking as a Savoy resident)  By paying taxes to support a member of the LTLS, we are paying our “fair share” to use any LTLS library—Tolono, Champaign, Urbana, etc.  This is how library systems work.  The 6% of CPL’s circulation represented by Tolono users is NOT significant…

I read Timbo’s argument. I think the key word is “speculating.“

I would be interested to hear more about the “word on the street”—how are individual hauling companies fulfilling their promise to recycle?

Timbo makes a smart, sound argument. Reread it.

I joined on 09-09-09 after living here over a year, and having to listen to my dad tell me how his best friend is, like, #27 or something crazy like that, and how said friend never lived further than 50 feet from the Illini Inn while going…

Dan Schreiber avatar

And, I might add, no one is being prevented from using the Champaign library. They are just being asked to pay their fair share if they are going to use it as their primary library.

Dan Schreiber avatar

The equation is pretty simple here. If you want social services, then pay the taxes required to run those social services. These things only work if everyone puts in their fair share. As a heavy user of the Champaign Library, I say bravo to this new policy.

Curtis Orchard is always good for an hour or three, especially if you have rugrats.

What is the increased marginal cost of serving a resident of Savoy or Mahomet? I suspect negligible. What is the increased revenue to be realized by this new policy? I suspect very little. Aside from these financial aspects, what are the most probable results from this new…

Looks like you are also all members of the killer sideburns club.

Thanks for the article, Ben.  I was not familiar with this band until now and even though I won’t be able to attend the show on Friday they are now on my radar.  A *good* jam band is hard to find, and these folks appear to fill…

Nice article, love the Dead quote in the beginning. If they can get down here to Central FL I’ll definitely be heading out to the show. Some of my friends have finally stopped wincing when I say “jam band.“ I’ve now tried my best at more descriptive…

@Annie: Yeah, my bad. That was the best part! Drinking + memory exercises = fun @Rob: According to Ask the English Teacher, “My dictionary says ‘drunk’ is an archaic past tense of ‘drink.‘“ We’re all about the new grammar around here.

Katie, have the residents of Savoy and Tolono thought about having their taxes raised a little to help their public library expand? That’s a possibility for them. And then everybody wins.

good call on that Herring recording, Josh. Love that version of Exit Music….here’s a clip of the Cinco de Mayo show (from about six months prior). As I recall, this Shakedown went on for roughly a half hour, while getting into the Trampled Underfoot jam in the…
