Degas and Dance Collide This Saturday

French painter Edgar Degas often depicted whimsical ballerinas with fluid brush strokes, creating art that depicted movement so gracefully, the paintings seemed almost to move. This Saturday, Champaign Park District presents an homage to the famous painter and sculpture with a real ballet dubbed “An Evening of Dance and Degas.”

The performance is particularly inspired by the impressionist painting “L’ecole de ballet de l’ Opera de Paris,” a stage scene with a few ballerinas performing and many more waiting their turn in the wings in front of a packed house. The show features the students and staff of Dance Arts, Champaign-Urbana’s only certified ballet training school, along with Irish music and jazz accompaniment.

The performance commences at 7 p.m. Saturday at The Virginia Theatre, Randolph Street and Park Avenue, Champaign. For tickets, go to call the box office at 356-9063. Tickets are $8 for adults, and $5 for children and seniors.
