Stiffest cocktail in town: Sidecar at Boltini
It’s a little fru-fru, but damn does it pack a punch. A sidecar is a classic pre-prohibition cocktail, and when made correctly, it tastes like candy and sits much better than say, oh, something like a Sour Pucker and Soda. You can make it at home with ease (1 part Triple Sec / Grand Marnier, 1 part Brandy / Cognac, 1 part freshly squeezed lemon juice — shaken and served up), but why go through the trouble when the barkeeps at Boltini will make it to perfection. Warning: you will likely be drunk after two. One if you are my wife. (SF)

Brother II Brother is hosting a “Know your Status” Super Hero Costume Party. They’ll have a photo booth, raffles, and door prizes, plus a costume contest at midnight. (TN)

2012 Insect Fear Film Fest, 7:00 p.m. (doors open at 6), free admission, Foellinger Auditorium
This annual film fest, sponsored by the Entomology Graduate Student Association, provides more than just shivers on the big screen. This year’s insect to fear is the ant, specifically the international ant. Short films and trailers (more kid appropriate) begin at 7:30 p.m., the scarier movies start at 8:00 p.m. Bring someone to hold so you won’t be too scared when the nuclear powered ant jumps out from behind the skyscraper. Occupy C-U plans to occupy a new area on Saturday. “Bring agitprop and drums to help radicalize the townspeople.” (TN)

Brunch Hunt: Escobar’s in Downtown Champaign
If there is one thing that the weekend brings to mind, outside of the idea that another work week looms just ahead, it’s the notion that you might wreck your diet before you’ve really had a chance to wake up from last night’s party. In Champaign, we have myriad options to hit brunch in town, and as such, we’re going to start bringing you a new suggestion every week or so to aid you in your search. Up first, Escobar’s in Downtown Champaign. The menu is similar to that of their lunch or dinner menu, but with a few more egg options, as expected, along with a nice bloody mary to boot. But for me, it always starts and ends with their Calamari Frito — perfectly fried squid steaks crusted in panko and served with an herb aioli that will make you want to lick the ramakin clean. That looks really good. Lately, I’ve had some pretty disappointing meals at a few of the so-called premier restauraunts in this town. But Escobar’s has been consistently solid and has moved up in the rotation. Carry on. (RH)

Dubstep is becoming more and more of a force in the C-U music scene, and the world-renowned Britdub-step extraordinaire Rusko brings the beats stateside. Prepare to sweat. (PS)
