FRIDAY, JANUARY 25

I’ve not seen this film yet, but Mathew’s review pretty much convinced me that it’s something I need to include in this weekend’s plans. The Art will be screening this from a 35mm print. (TN)

 
Motes, Moritat and Little Lies, Mike ‘N Molly’s, 9 p.m., $5
 
There are a lot of great shows this weekend. A few of them are happening at Mike ‘N Molly’s (as you’ll see if you scroll down). Motes are one of the best new-ish bands around town, relatively speaking. The rest of this bill is great, too. Moritat has been through town a few times over the last year or so, but is still worth the price of admission. Not only are you getting a pretty solid act from out of town, you get two other locals to bookend that band. If you’re going to be downtown, you might as well be at MIke ‘N Molly’s anyways, and this is further incentive. (PS)

Jenny Owen Youngs, Megan Johns, The Highdive, 7:30 p.m., $12
 
Here’s another alternative to the show at Mike ‘N Molly’s Friday night. Jenny Owen Youngs is making a return to C-U, even though she’s never played here before. She’s been around and knows about C-U, but she’ll have her chance to perform in front of the locals (with a local, Megan Johns) on Friday night. You can check out our interview with Youngs over in the music section to see what she has to say and hear some of her music before she comes to town. She does a pretty cool cover of Neutral Milk Hotel’s “King of Carrot Flowers, Part 1” if you’re a sucker for that sort of thing. (PS)
 

SATURDAY, JANUARY 26

Auditions—The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Parkland College, 1:00 p.m.

Open auditions will be held for the famous, unfinished Dickens piece on Saturday, January 26 and Sunday, January 27 from 1:00–4:00 p.m. Callbacks (including dance) will be on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. All auditions at Parkland College Theatre.

From the Parkland announcement:

Casting energetic singer/actor/dancers (ages 18+) for an audience interactive ‘show within a show’ set in an English Music Hall. Character descriptions can be found online. Please be prepared to sing a musical theatre song, 1 minute or less, that best shows your voice. An accompanist will be provided. Initial audition will consist of your telling a joke (30 seconds to 1 minute) or funny short story in an English dialect. Your choice of class of dialect. The actors of the Music Hall Royale are first and foremost entertainers, so don’t hold back! Dance and cold scene readings will take place at callbacks. (MG)

Smile Politely Show Series featuring Ramona Falls, Mille Nomi, Mike ‘N Molly’s, $10, 8 p.m.

I think most people around these parts (SP, that is) would tend to agree that this is the most promising show thus far in the very young year of 2013. Tracy did an awesome piece interviewing leading Ramona Falls man Brent Knopf to get us all worked up for the show this Saturday [aww, thanks! – TN]. If you haven’t done so already, find a way to listen to not only their album from last year, Prophet, but their debut as well, Inuit. It honestly will not take much of your time to realize that this is a must see this weekend. All good things going on with this bill. We’d be excited about the show even if it didn’t have our name on it. But since it does, well, we’re excited plus a bit more. (PS)

NATE HOLLEY Returns!, Boomerangs Bar & Grill, 9:00 p.m.

Nathan Holley, a versatile musician out of Central Illinois first played at Booms last fall, and he sold out the place! He returns this weekend for a 9:00 set, and you shouldn’t miss your chance to see him. Mixing acoustic jams with his looping magic is a sight you have to witness to understand, and even then you are hard pressed to explain it in a way that does it justice. Nate brings great musicianship and vocal power to both his original music and his unique covers. Head over to Boomerang’s Bar & Grill, 1309 E. Washington in Urbana. (MG)

 

SUNDAY, JANUARY 27

Jasper String Quartet, Krannert Foellinger Great Hall, 3:00 p.m., $10-$39, depending on demographic

As part of their Sunday Salon Series, Krannert Center welcomes the winner of Chamber Music America’s 2012 Cleveland Quartet Award. The Jasper String Quartet formed at Oberlin Conservatory, and is described as “sonically delightful and expressively compelling.”

The Jasper String Quartet will present this program:

  • Haydn: String Quartet No. 67 in F Major, Op. 77, No. 2
  • Kernis: String Quartet No. 2
  • Beethoven: String Quartet No. 9 in C Major, Op. 59, No. 3, “Razumovsky”
