An annual tradition serving up films from Venezuela, Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, Cuba, Argentina, and even the United States, the Latin American Film Festival is presented by the U of I’s Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies. Per The Art: “One of our most beloved annual events, the Latin American Film Festival features some of the outstanding feature films and documentaries from Latin America. The Black Dahlia Murder, Lorna Shore, Eminent Slaughter, Ode Vinter, The Highdive, 6:15 p.m., $15

There are many different types of music that exist in Champaign-Urbana, especially in a live setting. Plenty. There are probably some types that you haven’t experienced before, and one of them might be metal. Yes, metal, where the instruments are insanely loud and head-banging is involved, sure. If you’ve ever been interested, but never taken the leap, in catching a metal show, go for it this weekend. The Black Dahlia Murder, and the three openers that accompany them, will surely give you more than enough metal for your eardrums to withstand. It could be cool, and you might enjoy yourself. Who knows what could happen? (PS)

Allerton Music Barn Festival 2014: On the Twentieth Century (Concert Version), 2-7:30 p.m.

A true, underappreciated classic of the musical theater, On the Twentieth Century will be done concert-style for all you musical lovers. Per a KCPA synopsis: “This musical—part operetta, part farce, and definitely comedy—takes place on a train, the Twentieth Century Limited to New York. Cy Coleman’s music even evokes train movement and rhythms. This musical has it all: a temperamental actress, an egomaniacal impresario, a compromised Congressman, former lovers, protégées, and a religious lunatic.” With Book & Lyrics by Adolph Green and Betty Comden and Music by Cy Coleman; based on a play by Ben Hecht and Charles McArthur (and also a play by Bruce Milholland). Drive out toward Monticello and have some fun. (MG)

Here is a group of bands that are worth seeing this weekend. Nectar is the side-project of Kamila Glowacki, best known for her solo work in town, as well as being a portion of the surf-rock crew Kowabunga! Kid. She’s put out some good stuff, and you should listen to Nectar — because that is good as well. Check out the Facebook event (linked above) for more information on the rest of the bands. Enjoy the beer garden at Mike ‘N Molly’s before it is too late, as fall is already smothering us. (PS)
