Stopping by the Canopy Club on a short spring jaunt through the northern Midwest and out to New York is Saddle Creek’s indie-rock veterans, Cursive. Expect a night of personal catharsis; a live musical exorcism led by front man Tim Kasher with his aggressive manner of unleashing his vocals.
Cursive’s last two albums have lyrically documented the hopeless deterioration of Kasher’s marriage (Domestica), and the violent emotions and consequences in dealing with that failure (The Ugly Organ), all wrapped in emotional blasts of melodic post-punk/hardcore. Now with their latest release, Happy Hallow, Kasher finds himself looking for something more: all 14 tracks are focused from different viewpoints concerning the “bigger” picture, religion, and disillusionment.
Anticipate hearing cuts mostly from the newer albums, but lately, some new songs have been popping up into the set list according the show reports. The show is an early one, with a start time of 6:30 p.m. so get there when doors open to see local post-rock combo Oceans kick things off, followed by current Cursive tour mates and quirky Unicorns/Spoon filtered indie-poppers, Capgun Coup.
