The Overture: Feb. 23-Mar. 1

WHAT: Resinater, Gryscl, Heel Turn

WHERE: Error Records ($5)

WHEN: Monday, February 23rd, 8 p.m.

C-U’s resident stoner metal band and Memphis Skeletal Lightning Fest vets might just fill the SLF-shaped hole in your heart.
—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Damian Jurado, Rebecca Rego (solo)

WHERE: Exile On Main Street

WHEN: Tuesday, February 24th, 7 p.m.

Exile on Main St doesn’t always host in-store performances, but when they do, they host awesome, intimate shows. If the idea of seeing Damien Jurado and Rebecca Rego on that cute stage doesn’t make you feel warm inside you might be a lizard person — or you might just live in Illinois in February.

WHAT: Rave of Thrones featuring Kristian Nairin (Hodor) with Beartooth and Angel Agrawal

WHERE: Canopy Club ($15 advance, $18 door)

WHEN: Tuesday, February 24th, doors at 8 p.m., show at 9 p.m.

I’ve not gotten into Game of Thrones, but to those who are fans, Canopy Club is hosting one of the show’s stars Kristian Nairin, the actor who plays Hodor, as a DJ.

Chicago’s Toupée are a perfect noisy mess. Driving guitars and poignant vocals. Piss punks Gnargoyle, Downer’s Groove and new locals The Dingbats support.

WHERE: Canopy Club (sold out)

WHEN: Friday, February 27th, doors at 8 p.m., show at 9 p.m.

Seattle electro-pop duo Odesza return to Urbana on their current college town tour. I’m pretty sure their whole tour is sold out, including this show, likely due to the palatable nature of their music.

WHEN: Saturday, February 28th, doors at 10 p.m., show at 10: 30 p.m.

WPGU’s version of a battle of the bands is actually a “frattle,” meaning the participants are all members of the U of I Greek system, and this edition is DJs, not bands. Djing this time around will be DJ Mixerman (AEPi), Angel Agrawal (Sigma Nu), Dirty Di$co (ATO) and DJ AMPlifi (SAE).

EDITOR’S PICK: DREAM RITUAL, LOOMING, KRELBOYNE, WIR KONNEN, $AVAGEBOY
Error Records ($5) — Sunday, March 1st, doors at 7:30 p.m., show at 8 p.m.

Give Dream Ritual a listen and you’ll understand the appeal of their psychedelic grunge style. It’s a huge sound, and undoubtedly will be huger in the Error Records basement. And as if that wasn’t good enough, Springfield’s indie-punk stars Looming and emo boys Wir Konnen are also added to the show, with locals Krelboyne and $avageboy. That’s five bands for $5 — can’t do much better than that.
