WHAT: 4th Annual Roots Walk

WHERE: Crystal Lake Park (free)

WHEN: Friday, May 19 at 6 p.m.

Listen to the sounds of live local folk music while you stroll through beautiful verdant surroundings. The annual Roots Walk is one of the best off-season events produced by the C-U Folk and Roots Festival Collective, and this year, it’ll be held at the lovely Crystal Lake Park. A series of musical acts will be situated throughout the park for you to enjoy. See the event page for the full lineup of artists.

WHAT: Adam and Chris Carroll

WHERE: Sandwich Life House Concerts (message event page for address) ($20 suggested donation)

WHEN: Friday, May 19 at 6 p.m.

Country-tinged singer-songwriter duo Adam and Chris Carroll will lead this show, held in an intimate, cozy setting as is the norm for Sandwich Life Shows. Also normal for them is the potluck, which is decidedly abnormal for other music performances, and thus totally worth checking out.

Jessica Knight and Cassie Staub of Springfield alt-indie act Looming are coming through on tour. They’ll play a show with jazzy lounge act Sleeping Okami, Normal’s Pretty Pleased and noise act Pressure Eyes.

WHAT: Art Remastered: Solo Showcase at Krannert Art Museum

WHERE: Krannert Center (free)

WHEN: Friday, May 19 at 7 p.m.

Art Remastered will be local musicians responding to artwork on display at Krannert. Each musician has picked a piece to perform about, and on Friday, each one will play in front of the artwork that they have chosen. SIx different musicians will provide a different take on visual art by adding sonic art to it at this unique and family-friendly event. Check out the event page for the rundown of artists.

Katie and her band will bring their own brand of sass to the Post on Sunday for another show of jazz and cabaret guaranteed not to disappoint.

WHAT: Gonna Turnip the Beets: Food Not Bombs Fundraising Show

WHERE: Library House (donations)

WHEN: Saturday, May 20 at 6 p.m.

Food Not Bombs CU is a new organization that aims to provide free healthful meals to those in need in the community. For this inaugural dinner and show, attendees are asked to bring cups, plates, and cutlery to eat with and then donate, and additional donations are encouraged and appreciated. Local acts Holly Monet and harryoftheEarth will provide music for the event.

WHAT: Sounds at Sunset: New Souls

WHERE: Scott Park (free)

WHEN: Sunday, May 21 at 6 p.m.

The Sounds at Sunset Concert Series continues to bring you rotating local bands at rotating local parks. This year’s series is just getting warmed up, and they’ve got New Souls for Sunday’s episode. It’s difficult to say no to any show in a park, let alone a free, family-friendly one.

WHAT: Hear Our Song – Best of Broadway

WHERE: Faith United Methodist Church (1719 S Prospect Ave in Champaign) ($15 for adults / $10 for seniors [65 and older] and children [12 and under])

WHEN: Sunday, May 21 at 5 p.m.

Local performers will sing classic Broadway tunes for this charity event, which will also feature a silent auction. All proceeds will be donated to the Children’s Hemiplegia and Stroke Association (CHASA) to increase awareness for pediatric stroke.
