The Overture: May 1–7

WHAT: Lionize, Scathe

WHERE: The Highdive ($10)

WHEN: Tuesday, May 1st at 9:30 p.m.

Maryland’s Lionize released its new record SUPERCZAR and the VULTURE back in December, so they are taking their reggae-rock out on tour to support it. Check out their website while you’re at it, and it might be more interesting to look at if you’re on drugs or something. You make the call. Local hard rockers Scathe jump on the bill in support.

Listen: Lionize: “Surrender”

EDITOR’S PICK: THE CURSES, YEAR OF THE BOBCAT,
LAWNS OF URBANA, DAN PIERSON

Jupiter’s at the Crossing ($10 advance/$15 door) – Thursday, May 3rd at 6 p.m.

There are multiple reasons to venture out to Jupiter’s at the Crossing at any point. There are things adults can waste a lot of their money on and you can drink a lot out there while you do it. This is one of those times where you might spend your money on something other than those things and help support a pretty awesome benefit show, Rock Out Against Rape.

The Curses headline this one, which is expected to have more acts added to the bill. A variety of everything with these bands listed plus Dan Pierson, a U of I Jazz musician. Interesting combination offered at this one. Hey, when you get your ticket you not only donate to help victims of sexual assault, but you get free pizza and drinks that don’t have booze in them. It’s a little added incentive, I guess.

WHAT: Comfort Food, Dr. Responsible, Marathon, Jeremy Ruggles

WHERE: The Brass Rail ($5)

WHEN: Thursday, May 3rd at 9 p.m.

Comfort Food are releasing their new record and want you to hear it, but more importantly I can’t find a reason to ever leave a show that takes place at the Brass Rail out of The Overture (good or bad). This is a pretty solid bill, so it gets bonus points for choice of venue. The C-U Collective seems to be all over things recently, as they just had some stuff go down for the Midwest Zine Fest this last weekend.

WHAT: Fall Fox, Trouvere, Year of the Bobcat

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)

WHEN: Friday, May 4th at 10 p.m.

Chicago’s Fall Fox pays a visit to the cozy upstairs of Mike ‘N Molly’s with its acoustic folk that will be sure to warm that room up quite well. Year of the Bobcat is awfully busy this week, playing in three shows. Trouvere will close this one out with the late set following the headliner.

WHAT: So Long Forgotten, Bridge The Sea, Cloud Gavin, Year of the Bobcat

WHERE: Canopy Club ($7)

WHEN: Saturday, May 5th at 9:30 p.m.

I just want to make a note about the “influences” section on So Long Forgotten’s Facebook page (not that this matters very much, it’s just a talking point): Mudvayne, Bruce Springsteen, Silverchair, Smashing Pumpkins, Brad Paisley. Does that make sense? Probably not. Well, at least something is worth noting here: it’s Bridge The Sea’s last show ever in C-U, so if you’re fans of theirs, maybe head over to catch their set.

Listen: So Long Forgotten: “Hosanna”
