The Overture: March 16–22

With work, family, and spring being in the air, who has the time to find out about the best shows happening in Champaign-Urbana? No need to fear, because the editors here at Smile Politely have taken care of it. Here are the must-see shows of the week:

When: Tuesday, March 17

What: Exorna

Where: Bentley’s Pub, 10 p.m., cover tba

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with some Irish traditional music from the central Illinois trio Exorna.

When:
Thursday, March 19

What: Santa, Post Historic, Butterfly Assassins

Where: Canopy Club, 9:30 p.m., $5 in advance/$7 at the gate

Butterfly Assassins come back to C-U to once again prove they put on one of the best live shows around. I don’t know another band that can be equally out of control and technically tight. Jump to 2:30 in the video below to see the BAs rock out with Carl Hauck (complete with Santa’s Stan McConnell obstructing the camera’s view) the last time they were at Canopy.

When: Friday, March 20

What: Poundcake, Withershins, Sea Creatures

Where: Mike ‘N Molly’s, 10 p.m., cover tba

Look for a preview unpacking the local rock quartet Withershins this Friday.

When:
Friday, March 20

What: Beat Kitchen, Tree Thump

Where: Cowboy Monkey, 9:30 p.m., $5

Tree Thump’s primary instrument is a Didgeridoo. It sells itself.
