Champaign’s AM-KO Oriental Foods and Gifts store located at the corner of First Street and Springfield Avenue will close next month. The Asian grocery first opened in 1978 and has had the same owners for 15 years. At the end of July, AM-KO will close permanently due to the building lease not being extended.
As part of a close-out sale, everything in the store is 20% off.
The discount makes it a good time to stock up on pantry items like rice, noodles, flour, spices, oil, and vinegars.
I bought a pack of udon noodles, a bottle of sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, potato starch, and Japanese bubble gum for only $14. In addition to pantry goods (and yummy gum), the small grocery also sells sweet and salty snacks, freezer foods, fruit drinks, chopsticks, bamboo steam-baskets, olives, coffee filters, cookware, tea cups, bowls, and more.
AM-KO will only be open through July, so stop by the local grocery soon for one last visit before it closes permanently.
