It’s Welcoming Week, with events happening throughout C-U with the goal of building community and relationships between immigrants and those born in the U.S.
The Urbana Arts and Culture Program, Urbana Free Library, and Spurlock Museum are collaborating to present the latest installment of the City of Urbana’s Artist of the Corridor exhibition series: BELONGING(S). From the event page:
“It’s a collection of photography and short stories from local immigrants exploring identity, artifact, memory, and the meaning of home. Participants in the project identified an object from their home and through storytelling, illustrated its relationship to their personal experience with immigration.”
Artist of the Corridor exhibits are housed at the City of Urbana building as well as the Urbana Free Library. This special exhibition will also have a component at Spurlock, with a display of the objects that inspired participants’ stories.
There will be an opening reception, held in conjunction with the Immigrant Welcome Awards Ceremony and Celebration, at the Urbana Free Library on September 21st from 3 to 5 p.m.
The exhibition will extend beyond Welcoming Week; it will be on display through November, with a closing reception and story slam on November 20th at Spurlock Museum.
All of these events are free and open to the public.
