Fourth year students at the Carle Illinois College of Medicine are tasked with seeking out issues in healthcare, then partnering with engineering students to come up with technology that addresses these issues. This is their Capstone Innovation project. You can read about last year’s innovations on the Carle Illinois website.

Carle Illinois is beginning to reveal this year’s innovations, and there are two that have been shared so far.

Greg Payne and Bailey MacInnis have designed a new bedside table that would be more functional for patients as well as nurses, doctors, and any other providers who are assisting patients. A few of the features:

  • No legs that can become tangled up in cords
  • Hydraulics that make height adjustment easier
  • Integrated cup holder
  • Over the bed table can be folded down

Caywin Zhuang and Bara Saadah created an anti-fatigue vest to help surgeons through long procedures. From the Carle Illinois website, the vest “supports a surgeon’s neck, tracks posture electronically, and provides feedback. It’s designed to provide relief from postural fatigue after standing in a rigid position for hours at a time during surgery.”
