Champaign Unit 4 has a food distribution plan

One of the biggest concerns when shutting down schools is providing food for those children who rely on breakfast and/or lunch programs. Unit 4 has developed a plan for kids beginning March 23rd, when schools would’ve been resuming after Spring Break. 

The basics:

• This is for any child under the age of 18, they do not have to be Unit 4 students AND participants in the Young Adult Program.
• Drive up distribution sites at Booker T. Washington, Garden Hills, and Jefferson, with home delivery available for those without transporation
• Meal boxes will include five breakfasts and five lunches

Here are the specifics, from Champaign Unit 4 Schools:

During the state mandated school closure, Champaign Unit 4 is working to create a food distribution plan for those 18 and younger and any individual participating in the Young Adult Program. They DO NOT have to be a Unit 4 student to utilize this service.

In order to get an idea of the number of students who need these services during the closure, we are asking District families to fill out this form:

Beginning on Monday, March 23, we are planning to have three drive-up distribution sites open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. until noon at the following school buildings:

● Garden Hills Academy
● Booker T. Washington Stem Academy
● Jefferson Middle School

You must be in a vehicle with closed doors and windows in order to pick-up meals from sites. If no transportation is available, please call the Food Service Office (217) 351-3852 to set up home delivery of meal boxes.

The following process will be utilized by staff distributing meals at the distribution site:

● Sign #1: DO NOT Roll Down Windows or Open Doors
● Sign #2: How Many Children ages 18 and Younger
● Sign #3: Please Pull Up to Pick-Up Site to Collect Meal Boxes

A meal box includes five breakfasts and five lunches.

As we continue to navigate the rapidly changing news of the coronavirus, Unit 4 wants to remain as transparent as possible. While we are making every effort to accommodate our students’ needs during this time, we are subject to the same challenges many across the country are facing when it comes to the availability of food. If anything changes regarding the above plan, we will notify you as soon as possible.
