Do not forget Doughnut Day is June 7th

It’s National Doughnut Day on June 7th, so do not forget doughnuts this Friday. Doughnut Day is celebrated annually the first Friday of June. The holiday started in 1938 in Chicago as an homage to Salvation Army members who gave doughnuts to WW1 soldiers.

We have quite a few awesome doughnut shops in our area. Here is a look at doughnuts from local spots — in no particular order — to get tummies rumbling for Doughnut Day 2024.

Carmella’s Creme

All of the doughnuts Carmella’s Creme on Springfield Avenue are simple — no extravagant toppings or quirky frosting at this cash-only spot — but they are delicious. Go for my favorite here: the chocolate-iced doughnut. It’s truly amazing. The yeast doughnut is completely glazed on all sides — including the bottom — with a sugary shell in addition to a thick layer of rich, fudgy chocolate icing. For all about the shop’s offerings, check out Matt’s review of Carmella’s Creme doughnut shop.

Pandamonium Doughnuts

Champaign’s Pandamonium Doughnuts is known for their wonderful, big doughnuts with artisan flavors and from-scratch dough. Pandamonium slings their fancy doughnuts via truck and storefront. The doughnuts choices include rainbow sprinkles, cinnamon sugar, blueberry lemon, cereal-topped chocolate, and more. Pre-order online and read Serenity’s full review of Pandamonium doughnuts that published just a few weeks ago.

Industrial Donut

Industrial Donut, Savoy’s doughnut shop, offers customizable hot, decorated-to-order cake doughnuts. There’s a variety of glazes and toppings to pick from, but they also have a special doughnut of the week and menu of combinations, too. My kid loves how many M&M candies they put on the doughnuts, and I love how careful they are about allergies. Reserve Industrial Donut doughnuts for the sweet holiday here.

Ye Olde Donut Shoppe

My favorite glazed doughnut is the glazed from Ye Olde Donut Shoppe in Champaign — which has a drive-through! Open in Champaign since 1956, the doughnut shop offers a wide variety of yeast and cake doughnuts with daily specials. When ordering a dozen, this is the correct ratio of glazed doughnuts to any other kind just because the glazed ones are so, so good.

Royal Donut

Royal Donut has served doughnuts in Danville since 1973. In honor of Doughnut Day, this mom-and-pop shop is giving out free bags of six doughnut holes with each purchase. Royal Donut offers glazed yeast doughnuts, glazed cake donuts, specialty donuts, cinnamon rolls, and brownies. The angel bismark is a must.

Rick’s Bakery

Don’t sleep on the $1.50 doughnuts at Rick’s Bakery. Selection is slim — there’s only two choices: regular sugar and cinnamon sugar — but these pillowy yeast doughnuts are made fresh daily and just as yummy as everything else the Downtown Urbana bakery makes.

Teamoji

Mochi lovers should check out the mochi doughnuts at Teamoji on Green Street. The bubble tea shop has a variety of flavors including strawberry, ube (purple yam that originated from the Philippines), coconut, and Nutella. See the menu online, and check out Ayesha’s full review of the Camputown eatery.

Parlor Doughnuts

Lastly, we will soon have a Parlor Doughnuts in Champaign, too. I haven’t ever had doughnuts from Parlor before, but they seem like they’ll be the Crumbl Cookies of doughnuts. I’m excited to try some when the new shop opens later this year.
