University of Illinois’ Assistant Professor of African American Studies Dr. Bobby J. Smith II wrote a new book called Food Power Politics, and it’s getting national recognition. Food Power Politics has been nominated for the James Beard Foundation’s 2024 Media Award in the category of Reference, History, and Scholarship. Dr. Smith’s book is one of only three books nominated in the category.

With a background in agricultural economics and Black justice at the forefront of his interdisciplinary research, Dr. Smith uses food power politics as a framework to combine both the history of how food was used as a weapon against Black people and, importantly, how they fought back against the injustices. Food Power Politics uniquely centers Black justice in civil rights history, highlighting the work of Black Mississippi farmers of the past and empowering Black farmers today.
