Just over a month after being recognized as one of Champaign-Urbana’s Sexiest Politicians by this very publication, State Senator Mike Frerichs has announced that he will run for State Treasurer. According to Tom Kacich, Frerichs, who is known for his farm-family roots in, his Yale Law Degree, and his towering height (not to mention his soft, but stern, gaze and his chiseled physique) will enter the race with a campaign war chest of over $515,000.
At 39, Frerichs has garnered broad support, the core of which lies with state labor unions. He also serves on several key committees, including Agriculture & Conservation, Public Pensions & State Investments, Financial Institutions, and Higher Education, for which he acts as Chairperson. Assuming a dead body doesn’t wind up in the trunk of his Subaru, Gifford’s favorite son is poised to become a major player in state politics.
