I just learned about Beckhenge

We are all quite familiar with Stonehenge, the ancient monument in England where thousands gathered today — the summer solstice — as it aligns with the sunrise on this particular day.

Well, I never realized that we in fact have our own “henge” right here in C-U. Beckhenge, which is actually a five piece sculpture created by Stephen Luecking titled “Upwells”, stretches across the quad in front of Beckman Institute. Sometimes you can live in this town for 20 years and not be aware of something that’s been right in front of your face.

The sculpture acts as a sundial of sorts, marking the solstices and equinoxes with the shadows cast by the spire.

Today at 12:54 p.m., the sun was at its highest point in the sky, which had the clouds stayed away would’ve cast a shadow from the spire directly through the fountain closest to it.

Guess we’ll have to wait ’til September to see Beckhenge cast it’s famous shadow.
