Illinois Theatre has a production opening at Krannert Thursday and the title won’t fit here

This Thursday at 7 p.m., Illinois Theatre will open The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade. It’s kind of a play within a play that speaks to the rise of nationalism (huh, familiar) during the reign of Napoleon.

Under the guest direction of Laura Hackman, the cast of all undergrad students portray a collection of inmates in an asylum re-enacting the French Revolution. This adaptation will feature some original music composed by a student sound designer, and that music will all be played on “found” instruments.

Note: This production contains adult content, including mob and individual violence and a scene of sexual assault, and is intended for mature audiences only.
