IMC artist in residence named UPA Artist of the Corridor

Urbana unveils a new Artist of the Corridor, displaying Travis Hocutt’s artwork in the Urbana City Building at 400 S. Vine St. from December 1st to February 29th. He will also have an exhibition at Urbana Free Library (210 W. Green St.) from December 11th to January 15th. Urbana Public Arts will hold an opening reception at 5pm on Friday, December 18th, in the City Building’s lobby.

Even though Hocutt did his undergraduate work in Boston and his graduate work at Cranbrook Academy of Art near Detroit, he says, “Urbana is my hometown and it’s been a wonderful year of working as an artist here and reconnecting to the local arts community.” He went on to say that he is “very honored” by the selection.

Even though just awhile back, I was coveting this incredible lamp he created, the work being displayed near the café inside UFL will be a mixture of brand new and previously-seen. Images from his Micrometeorite Collector Experiment were also shown at the Urbana Arts Expo, but he promises work from his “…newer Orion project.”

Based on what I’ve seen, I can’t wait to see more, and I hope you are able to attend either of the receptions for an intriguing local artist. If not, at least swing by the shows…micrometerorites are worth a look.
