Local film, Scary Normal, premiers in Lansing, Michigan

On February 8–9, members of the cast and crew of the new film Scary Normal (filmed on location in Champaign-Urbana, IL in June 2012) had the honor of attending the MBLGTAC Conference in Lansing, Michigan, to be present for the world premiere of the film. We received a warm, enthusiastic welcome from the students at the event, who watched the film with laughter and tears at all the right moments, and a few whispered suggestions for the characters in the movie (“Kiss her! Kiss her!”). The audience was so enthusiastic at the Q&A after the screening that we were eventually kicked out of the convention center so that they could close down the building, but we anxiously await the opportunity to screen the film on many of the campuses that were represented at the conference.

We are also excited for the Champaign-Urbana premiere, which will take place on February 21, 2013, at the Art Theater Co-op in Downtown Champaign at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available now at the Art Theater Co-op and cost $7 in advance and $8 at the door. All proceeds (after space rental fees) will be directed to the Urbana High School GSA, the Up Center of Champaign County, and the Champaign Centennial High School GSA to assist them in their work supporting LGBT students and their allies.
